kids first quad... advice?
#1
I have a 7 year old girl and a 5 year old boy and want to get one quad that the 7 year old can ride now and that the 5 year old can ride on flat and easy terrain now and can grow into it later. The honda 90s are nice but am not sure I want to invest the money on something they will outgrow quickly. So, I am trying to find a cheaper but decent quality(not a POS quad). Our friends have a kazuma and they are not sure if they would "save the money" again due to how many times it has been in the shop. Although, I think they only spent $600 and ride the hell out of it.
Any advice on a dependable/quality quad that is inexpensive that would fit my kids?
Thanks

Look for a used Suzuki LT80.
I don't think you should even consider a Honda 90 at this point. When my youngest started riding (age 6) our smallest bike was the Honda 90. I had him in the yard on it for months and finally took him out on some easy trails. (Now he was 7). While we had no mishaps and he had a good time, it was obvious that it was too large for him to be in complete control. We got an LT80 and it made a world of difference.
The Honda 90 is on the large size of the mini's - most 10 year olds should fit it well and even some a few years older.
Avoid the temptation to buy a quad that they will grow into - bad idea all around. Either get one of the Chineese throway bikes where you only invest $700 or get a name brand used mini. Unless you really trash the ATV, a good quality mini (if purchased used) can be sold for very close to what you paid for it.

I think you should at least look into the E-ton 70/90 atvs. They share the same frame, just the 90 has bigger tires and engine, maybe a few more features. They are well suited to the size of an average 5/7 y/o. In a year or two you could pick up one of the larger minis for your older one, because you will likely want another one by then anyway. I agree that the Honda 90 is a tad big for most kids under 8. There are a lot of good minis out there, make good use of the search feature on this site and you will get tons of info/experiences.

Thanks for the info.
Does raceway sell E-ton? If not where? Also, my kids sat on a predator, which I thought was OK in size, but more than I wanted to spend. Anyone know what off brand would be comparable in size?

I bought a Kazuma 50 over 3 years ago for my son. The only issues I've had with it were the brakes that never worked and recently the starter quit working. Last weekend at Gordon's, my wife was pushing it in the sand to reserve an area for friends and the handle bars broke right at the weld below the clamp.
I rode it a lot (I only weigh 135ish), my son rode it a lot, (He turned 4 last Dec), we also rode a lot of 2-up. I used to do wheelies and "bicycle" it all over the place in my back yard track. Never had problems with it except as noted above. It's been outside for the last 2 years.
I'm going to get it welded back together and give it to my youngest son (2 in April) and get the eldest a Suzuki.
It was definately the best $600.00 we spent on a toy thus far.

Unlike other small quads, the LT-A50 (the 2-stroke model) has plenty of power even when restricted. Ours climbs hills with ease and can even climb over a curb when stopped right against it, yet with its current settings won't go over 12-15 MPH. You want enough power that the kids don't get frustrated, but not so much that they can go too fast for their skills.
Lastly, that point about resale value is quite true. We paid $1100 for ours and expect to get every penny back out of it when the time comes to upgrade.
Don't forget a top-quality brand new motorcycle helmet made especially for children.

My boy was sick of the lt50 when he was 6. They are way to slow and have no power on the hills. If you could find a lt80 it may work. But they are very tippy in the front end. If there is any eton dealers they make a 70 that is very nice. Also is there an Arctic Cat dealer in your area? We have a Cat and they are great. You can get the 50 whick is the same size of the 90 . Then when they need more speed you can get the 70 kit for it. They also make a 90cc 4 stroke which is fully auto. It is a great machine for the price. You can't beat an Arctiic Cat mini. Ours has been very tuff and I would buy another 1. But the Honda is the best mini on the Market!! If she can shift it will last thru both of your kids! But a 7 yr old on a Honda 90 is not allowed by law. But Michael has rode 1 since he was 6.
