Default Polaris Sportsman 90

I just purchased a 2001 Sportsman 90 for my son. It starts hard and once it is running has little power. completely useless once it gets hot to where it will continue running but will not move at full throttle. I have removed and cleaned carb, added fuel treatment and Gumout as it sat for a couple of years in previous owners garage. Any ideas as to the lack of power?

The boy just sits and looks at it hoping it will heal itself.

Make sure that the exhaust is not plugged. Check the port by the head to see if it's closed off by carbon and the muffler. It might be soaked with old oil deposits clogging it up. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Hi there,

I also have purchased a sportsman 90 and am having power issues. It will run but only at an idle. When you give it gas it will shut off. If it is running and you lift up the back end it will run out nicely. I have checked the carb, the pipe, the clutch, and belt and all looks good. Did you have any luck figuring yours out? Please let me know any helpful information. I will do the same.

Thanks alot,

Nathan

I second the exhaust being plugged..Some of the early models actually had a little restrictor that went on the tail pipe to make it smaller..Make sure its not on there.

Nathan,

I took our Sportsman 90 to the Polaris dealer yesterday as I ran out of ideas. I'll let you know what they find.

Let us know what you find out. My son likes that quad and we were looking at them, but if they are really underpowered, I will avoid it.

The Polaris two stroke 90s are definetly not underpowered when they are running properly..
