De-restricting Kymco model 50s
#1
I know that there has been allot of postings about this here, but no one so far has mentioned a resolution.
I was wondering if anyone has found a solution to eliminating the CDI box rev limiter, on the models without the green loop wire?
My son is getting tired of his slow quad, and I don't want to replace it jet. Plus he is not old enough for a bigger model.
I have already removed the restrictors in the transmission, and he has a bigger set of wheels. I now need the motor to rev higher.
Anyone?

Airmobile,
It is a 4 stroke. Should be the same model mechanically as your KFX50.
Firehog,
The Kymco model was the best thing I could find for my son.
He fits the machine better than the others, and the controls seem accurate compared to other machines.
Plus the Kymco copies allot of Honda designs, mine even has a Honda CVT belt in it.
I would bet that Kymco purchased allot of dies and tooling from Honda, or copied the same techniques, when they started making these machines.
My only complaint so far is lack of power / speed from the machine. My son has "outgrown" the machine in skill, and needs more power.
I know that motor has it in there; I just need to over-ride the CDI to get it out.

I have the cdi issue taken care of already. Trust me, its well worth it !!!! Take a look at my pics(click the camera icon under my screen name). There you will see my aftermarket cdi box wired up. Im pretty sure its the same wiring. you can compare your wiring to mine by the pic. Now, I have done alot to my sons bike since him and I race harescambles. I will tell you this, it is no slug. This thing will flat out haul the mail. Granted, its not a 2-stroke, so it falls just alittle short on take off,but once the engine gets moving, this bike can compete !!!!
Heres the link to the cdi. Its from ooracing.com in the UK. Its not plug and play, but it works. They accept paypal and there shipping is awesome. I got the cdi within 7 business days. If you need any help, just send me a message.

Thanks Airmobile!
I will be ordering a CDI real soon.
There is no way my son is ready to race in any event, (and his mother would not allow it!), but that stock CDI restricts that little 50 so much that he just can get going on the trails here in the northwest.
This may sound strange, but I'm am glad that the machine comes so restricted from the start.
Too many people buy these machines for their kids, and do not teach them to ride. Then their kids get hurt, and they place the blame on someone else instead of themselves for lack of training.
I walked/ran next to my son for 3 months with the tether in hand before I knew he was ready to ride by himself. I set up a training course in the yard with cones and obstacles for him to practice on for another 3 months, before we when out to the riding area for the first time.
And even then he "forgot" (read panicked) that there was a front and rear break, and put the machine on its side.
He was fine, got back on, and road the rest of the day. Now he has the skills for a bigger machine, just not the age.
By opening up this quad, he will become a better rider, and enjoy the sport more.
Thanks again!

Its a harescramble, so there are usually no jumps. Just tight woods with an occasional wide open area for the kids. He really likes it.
I personally did the cone thing for my son also. It definately improves their rider kills.
