DS 90 owners???????
#1
Hey,
just picked up a 2004 DS 90 for my little guy as an upgrade from a Gio 70cc. Looks to be a much better bike and he loves it. I have a couple of questions for anyone who can answer.
1. Are parts readily available for these bikes and if so where? Dealer?
2. There seems to be a little play (side to side) in the front wheels. Is this a bearing problem?
3. The ignition has an extra position with a light symbol marked on it. Is there a light kit that is an easy install?
4. Anymore info sites on these bikes? Similar bikes?
The bike starts really easy and it seems to have much more power than the old Gio.
Thanks

Just sold our 2005 DS90 2 stroker this week, is your 2004 a 4-stroke or 2?
1. Yes part are readily available, all the asian mini's (Tiawan) use virtually the same parts and components (except for the chinese brands). We also have an Arctic Cat 90 and it was the same as the DS90 with different plastics, used the same racing shocks and suspension (a-arms and swingarm). You can use powertrain parts and some racing suspension components from an Eton, DRR, Dinli, Kasea, AlphaSport, etc
2. That play is fine, you can pop off the rubber caps from the center of the front hubs, remove the cotterpin and tighten the hub nuts some to take up some movement, just make sure the hubs still spin freely after...
3. The 2-position key switch is for accessories for other models/branfds, like our AC comes from the factory with a taillight and the key turns that on in the second position, the first is just run.
BRP doesn't offer lighting, but like I said before just look for lighting from other brands and install those if you want. Just make sure the wattage is less then the stator output, otherwise you'll drain the battery. Eton came with headlights.
4. Check out the DS and Youth sections on canamtalk.com forums... Also ATVRiders.com has alot of mini racers in the 90cc and under section.
Hope that helps

Thanks!! Answers all my questions.
Great to know that the other brand ATV's are same/similar. Makes for more selection of parts. I'll try the hub nuts. Hopefully don't have to buy bearings, they are pricey at the dealer.

Cool. Also, the screen is missing from the spark arrester/muffler. Guess the previous owner took it out. Any probs with this? The bike smokes a fair bit, I know its a 2 stroke, but how much is normal?
Had a ride with my boy(5) this weekend and the bike never had any trouble with any of our trails. Hills, water etc.... Pleased so far.
Thanks

The CanAm / Bombardier DS90 2 strokes and the Arctic Cat Y12 90 2 strokes were both made by Herr Chee using some common powertrain parts that Eton and others also used. However, neither were not made by Eton.

This same thick oil residue, that plugs the spark arrestor screen and the exhaust port, is also collected in the exhaust pipe. The excessive smoking sometimes is this residue finally getting burned off when you are getting the pipe hot enough.
Another contributing factor to excessive exhaust smoking and oil coking is the oil injector pump cable is sometimes not adjusted very good from the factory. Very common to observe the injector pump lever moving with the thumb throttle way before the carb throttle slide starts to rise, hence it starts injecting a higher rate of oil even before the engine rev off idle which then causes smoking like the dickens when running around at partial throttle.
At low RPM's they barely need ANY oil to lubricate so we always re-adjust the injector cable slack so that the carb throttle slide starts to raise before the injector pump lever moves off of home. This does NOT affect WOT oiling because the factory pump cams supply way more volume then even a modified engine requires. You can't get it turned down enough... so no danger of going too lean.
