Yes, the bike had a boatload invested in chrome and trailer queen garbage. If you were to put your money into a new 400EX, the engine mods and the suspension, I think you would be well under the Cannondale. Or, you could chrome the heck out of it and look good until it get's dirty. I feel that my original post stating that you could build the 450 was accurate, but maybe a little vague> I assumed that if you were interested in performance, you wouldn't spend one dime on it if it didn't make it go faster or handle better.

Is the cannondale fast.......yes, hello...look at the frickin motor. How come all anyone wants to know is "how fast is it?" I would love to know, how long will it take 30 foot arials. Or...how much to parts cost...can you get them.? Or...how would the Cannondale hold up to any atv on a mx track?

Any quad is fast with a big ol engine.....like a rapture or a Boat-abomber-adeer. lol

While all you people are so worried about how fast this or that quad goes...i will be ripping airs and riding the rear wheels over the whoops!

PS....any quad is fast with the right rider on it!

PSS....what makes a great quad is not how fast it will go in a 1/4 mile....or 1/8 of a mile.....just to let you all know.

by making it a honda 450 i would think you would lose that honda reliability?

 

Basically, the 450 is a 440 bored out to the largest overbore. They have been running that combination since the XR400 was introduced with no ill effects on reliability. I will admit that going to the largest overbore from the outset is not my idea of good planning.
Additionally, Honda has always over-engineered their stuff, so it holds up well to big bores and power producing mods.

 

Yes but you'd have to turn the motor in to swiss cheese and it would never match the 400ex's handling. As soon as the 400 put little mods the 400 would beat it. The cannondale and the 400 are a diffrent story, they commpare them but all a cannondale is, is a highly modded 400ex except for fuel. Its geat that they tried but they'll have two try again.

 

There is a lot of things that change a engine's performance and reliably other than displacement. There are tons of posts that are something like "will a 440ex beat a raptor or banshee?" But the real question should be what other than being bored, sleeved or stroked was done to it. Not all 440cc Sporttrax 400ex based engines will be the same in performance. There are too many posts that just ask about a 440ex but what else was done to the engine? when saying 440ex that saying it was bored sleeved and/or stroked and with only that done you are not going to get a big boost in performance with the boost in displacement only. But then on the other hand who has a stock 400ex engine with the only modification a boost in displacement?
