Changing oil question

I know this has been visited in the past but I wanted some feedback on how best to clean that stupid oil filter in the rear of the motor. How are you suppose to remove that clamp, it's a press on type? I would reinstall a hose clamp type but getting that stupid thing off is my question. Does anyone know what size that screw in filter is? I can't even get a wrench inside there to find out the size. I thought about removing the header pipes but even those nuts are so weird I don't have any socket or anything that would remove them. In the past when I've changed the oil I left the rear filter alone just because you have to dismantle the entire quad to get to it, what a pain in the ***!!

You mean the oil inlet filter? I left it alone too. I'm about to change the oil tomorrow and I was kinda wondering the same thing. I guess just use an air compressor to clean the filters... thats what I did and it worked great.

What I meant was how do you even get to that filter to remove it? How do you remove those clamps, they are some kind of press on. It's beyond me why they would use that type unless you don't have to remove the oil inlet hose in order to unscrew the filter from the engine. The manual really sucks when it comes to this procedure. I tend to change the oil in the crankcase and transmission after every ride so if this rear filter is suppose to be cleaned each oil change, I'm going to have to buy some "special" tools.

The nuts on the exhaust are just twelve point nuts instead of your normal six point. Use a twelve point socket. The size of the inlet screen is 14 mm. Look where the oil line goes into the frame. Remove the bolt that holds the retaining plate which holds the oil line that goes into the frame. Wiggle the line and it will come out of the frame. Leave the clamp on the frame end alone but cut the clamp on the screen end and replace with a stainless steel hose clamp. The screen inside is a VERY coarse screen intended to catch only large particles. You should not have hardly anything in it when you remove it. If that is the case then you will only need to clean this screen once a year unless you see more than normal contamination in your oil filter. In order to get to the inlet screen and really do it right you need to remove the exhaust. All the plastic, fuel tank and upper shock bolt need to be removed also. It is a time consuming job.
Just clean the screen and put it back in. It should never need to be replaced unless it is damaged. It is a lot easier to cut he clamp, remove the hose, then unscrew the inlet screen.

Well I finally figured everything out on removing the rear oil inlet filter. You have to remove all the plastic, gas tank, unbolt the top of the rear shock, move the fuel line out of the way, loosen the bottom mounting bolt for the rear shock so it's loose enough to move it backward and out of your way. Make sure you have something holding up the rear of the quad or it will come crashing down without the shock attached!!! Shove the protective heat shield back that covers the oil line that goes into the inlet of the back of the motor. To remove that clamp, there is a small piece of metal, a tab if you will, that you have to pry up, once it's pried up, you can get a flat blade screw driver under the end of that clamp and pop it loose. Then pull off the oil line. To remove the inlet filter, if you have a deep 14mm socket, that would work the best. I did not have one so I used a 14mm open end wrench. Just unscrew the inlet, the filter will stay inside the motor, grab it with a pair of needle nose or something. Mine was not at all dirty so I doubt if I'll go through this hassle every time I change the oil and clean the other oil filter. I used a hose clamp when I put the oil line back on instead of that factory clamp.

Hmmm, not sure why you guys are having to take everything off. It was a tight fit but I was able to remove the hose and remove the filter without taking anything off. My Cannibal is an 02 and they may have changed some things.

I could probably do it now without having to remove the fuel tank and moving the rear shock out of the way but since this was the first time, I wanted to be able to see what I was getting into. Removing that stupid clamp was the hardest part, once I figured out how to do that, the rest wasn't bad. It would have been alot easier with a deep 14mm socket though!! My filter did not have any metal shavings in it so I don't believe I will be doing this procedure very often in the future!!

Being thats its an inlet filter, I beleive the regular filter on the side of the engine will catch most everything before it gets to the inlet one right? I dont think its neccesary to clean it every time or even every other time, because there wont be much of anything in it if any thing at all.
Wait untill you go to drop the engine if you think the filter is a pain!
Man there is so much little stuff you have to remove or disconnect its like working on something that NASA built! Hee! Hee! The radiator and fan were the hardest things for me to get off. Good thing is all the wires are labled (or mine are anyway, could have been because my dealer has had the engine out and the mechanic labled every thing) I labled them in my own words ect. though. I could drop the engine out of my 250x in like 30min. Some say you have to take the engine down on an X before you can remove it, but if you use alittle muscle you dont. Im not even going to say how long the C-Dale took me. I think I can do it easier the next time though since I know what Im getting into ect. Maybe knock an hour off! HA!
