I need to pick a few brains here. I am thinking of buying a 400ex and modding it up to see what it can do, but if its a waste of time I may not. So my question is simple. Will a 400EX with a jet kit and pipe keep up with a dale? If not, how about a jet kit, a pipe, and a 440 kit? I always loved the looks of the EX, and need another bike. Could just get the Suzuki, but dont want to buy the first year, plus I can get a 400EX used for next to nothing, so was just wondering if I put 2000$ dollars into the motor of a 2500$ used quad would it disappoint me since im used to the dale? I dont care about drag racing and who is fastest...im talking MX and just trail riding. IM NOT here to start a war, im just asking a simple Q.
thanks guys

I had a 99 EX with a 88mm 11:1 piston, Web cam, modded carb, WB E series, and modded airbox. It was compareable to a stock Cannibal powerwise, up to the top end. It doesn't drive like a 400ex though. I'm still getting use to mine, the EX was easier to putt around on with my 4x4 buddies. If I could find a comfortable position for the front brake/throttle on the Cannidal...I don't think I'd even think about my old 400ex anymore. If I could have, I would've kept the 400ex. The only complaint I had was the extra vibration from the larger piston/hotter cam setup.
ATC250r will be able to give you a good review, as he still owns both. I can't comment on how it feels going back and forth between one....
Alaska also owed a 400ex prior to his C-dale purchase....I'm sure he'll pipe up here pretty quick.

I had an 01 400ex and liked it a lot, except I came to the point where I was going to have to put money into the motor and carb and wasn't sure which direction I wanted to go with it. I also wasn't convinced that an air cooled motor would be reliable with a big bore kit and such. I haven't been able to give a full comparison to my old EX and my current Speed due to the fact that my 400EX was set up at 50" of width front and rear and also had ZPS triple rate front shocks and a ZPS rear shock, so the Speed is taller and narrower in it's stock trim; which is why I have all the parts on order right now for the chassis.
I can compare the power delivery between the two and truly there is a night and day difference in power. I could not pull holeshots on piped Banshees, Raptors, and R's before where I can now. I have not ridden a 400EX with a modded engine, but it didn't sound like it would impress me too much. I really like how the 'Dale can get up the revs for attacking jump faces in a short distance as a lot of our jumps come after sandy turns.
My 400ex was a great quad, I just personally felt it was time for a chnage instead of motor work. JIM

My 2000 400EX had the white bros and jet kit.
The money spent on a 400EX could be a waste. I talked to Sparks about big bore and Trinity and with Higher commpression and bigger displacement that they will run Hotter and may break the cases. Where are you planning on riding. If your racing, get suspension, if your duning get HP.
Just my thoughts.

Im just curious if I threw 2000$ dollars into the engine and got a 3000$ used quad if it would hold up against the dale, so I could use it as my back-up and not have too much in it.
Mostly riding in the trails of the front range of colorado, (but right now we are on fire around here it is crazy.
