Hey guys, just a quick question on out of state taxes? I live in Indiana and I am purchasing a Blaze in Virginia this weekend. The dealer is giving me a deal under his cost, but says that he has to charge me Virginia Sales Tax? Is this correct? I thought that I had to pay the tax in the state that I reside, not sure though? I am not going to let $3XX dollars ruin the deal, its just a question. Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm not sure about that maybe someone else knows more. I was under the impression that you don't pay sales tax when purchasing from another state because you're not a resident. You get charged tax in your own state when/if you register it. I know of several out of state dealers who told me if I bought from them I wouldn't have to pay sales tax.

I think it depends on the state and if they require registration. Here in VA quads don't get registered so their treated like any other general merchandise and you will have to pay tax. Without the vehicle registration its just like going into Walmart and buying something.

Now if you own a farm, and are willing to sign the tax exempt farm use paperwork you could probably do that.

i would call the state tax commission in that state and ask them. i have bought stuff off the net all over the united states and have never had to pay sales tax on anything i bought out of my home state. that good deal wont be so good if he's charging you a tax that he's gonna put in his pocket. here our sales tax is 7% so on a $ 10,000 quad the tax would be $ 700 so if you actually are not required to pay it then he just bumped the price up on the quad $ 700 i would check into it if i was you.

I will call the state. Thanks. I've got the sales invoice from the dealer and I am paying $400 less than what he had to pay Cannondale, so the $3XX in sales tax is neglidgable, but I don't want to pay it if I shouldn't.

Mail order is a little different because your not actually buying it in the state. If you order something mailorder within the same state they are supposed to charge you tax. If the dealer was shipping the quad out of state to you, you should'nt have to pay the state tax.

I've actually gone into a store in another state and bought merchandise and had them ship it to my house rather than carry it out with me because the shipping charge was cheaper than the sales tax.

Either way when you register it with your state you will end up paying sales tax. Just remember it's an election year and those damn Liberals have to GO! Remember this when you vote. Just .03 worth (inflation)

Another notion about this topic, similar to what JayBr said: I was told by the business manager at a dealerhsip in North Carolina that if you are taking posession at the dealership, you would be required to pay the tax. If it was shipped to you- nada.

I was lucky in the way you're hoping to be. I bought mine out of state(in Florida) and drove to pick it up. I was not charged sales tax. Had he tried, I was gonna' play real dumb and tried to argue the out of state thing. Not to mention that my cashier's check didn't include money for taxes.

The best bet, like someone said, is to call the tax commissioner's office (804)367-8037. That's the number for Sales and Use tax according to the Richmond phone book.

Good Luck!

I buy out of state and I don't register in my home state. NO taxes.
I don't ride in my home state ,either, We have 13 miles of ATV trails available in this socialistic state of Illinois.
