Default Steering Stem Slop

Has anyone had problems with up and down slop in the steering stem? My stem has probably an inch of up and down movement. I thought the nut on the bottom may be loose, but that wasn't the case. Any suggestions?

Check the bearing at the bottom of the stem. It rides in a plate ***'y right below the tie rod ends. mine had a similar problem and it was a combination of the bolts that hold this bearing in being loose and the plates were bent (spread apart) allowing the bearing to move up and down. If this is the case remove the stem nut and the mounting bolts for the bearing assembly and pull the stem up enough so you can remove the bearing and plates. Either replace the plates or smash them back together so the bearing can ride it them without moving up and down. The reassemble everything and put some locktite on the bearing bolts so they don't work loose again.

What all is involved in removing the stem? does the airbox type thing have to be removed? How long do you think it will take to do this?
