County Police Add All Terrain Vehicles
The Community Policing (Patrol) Division of the Gaston County Police Department has acquired two Yahama Rhino All Terrain Vehicles courtesy of Alpha Motorsports of Rock Hill through Yahama's Law Loan Program.
These Rhinos will be used to support patrol operations by enhancing officer's ability to access remote areas that might be encountered during searches for people or drug growing operations, hiker rescues, or to discourage trespassing by ATV operators.
A Rhino will be on display at the North Carolina Welcome Center located on I-85 at exit 5 near Kings Mountain on Friday, May 16 from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm. This display will be a part of the larger display associated with the activities at the Welcome Center.
For further information contact Sergeant Mark Johnson at 704-629-2235.

That's true for the most part. You can find a whole list of N.C. atv laws and at the end of the list it says that none of the laws apply to atvs in use for farming or hunting.
Gaston county is one of those places you can't ask county police officers about atv rules and laws without getting different answers from every officer. It seems to be more of the officers opinion and the riders actions that determine the outcome of a situation. When county officers encounter atvs on a rural road they will usually stop and talk to the rider. If the rider is respectful and sober the officer will usually let him go on his way.

Well I think it pretty cool!! reason....if there are police patroling the trails, this will help curb some of the problems the ignorant riders are causing for general ohv enthousists that obey the written and un-written rules of the trail.
Here in Albuquerque there is a division of the local P.D. called Open Space Police, that ride the trails on some big popo's. I personaly have been stopped by them to check my registration. There presence in an area puts almost a complete stop to the stupid actions of others that makes headlines. Also the tickes that are written is another revenue sorce for the local coffers...hence (hopfully) less chance of trails getting closed. just my opinion
