Ok, I'm buying a head unit with my christmas money, and needed some advice. I'm going to get a pretty nice one, but not like the top of the line type. I have around $300 to work with, maybe a little more. Just post what you have, or what you would get. I was looking at an Alpine one for $279. thanks

dang tate, sounds like you got a kickin system there. Powerbase? never heard of them. how much did you pay for your Amp? I'm just putting in a head unit, and some lil 6x8's for now, cause I want to get another car and switch it to that car. I saw some of those pioneer premiere units, looked nice.

If you want sound quality and features, no doubt, go Alpine. Get one that is NOT self-amplified, you lose sound quality with pre-amplified head-units.
Then you will need an amp for your mids and tweets and an amp for the shakers. But if SQ is your thing, don't go pre-amplified and get some good highs and mids, as they are AS important as sub selection.
In my 2002 Nissan Altima V6 (245 HP, 5 speed, 14.8 1/4 stock, ), i have the factory BOSE head unit (I kept it because of the 6-disc in dash changer), wired with Fusion heavy gauge wiring kit.
I have 8 speakers total (w/ out the subs). I kept the 2 Bose tweets in the pillars (cuz they are awesome), I swapped the Bose 6 1/2 for Clarion 1-way mids in the front doors and Clarion 2-ways in the rear doors. I switched the factory bose 6x9's on the rear shelf with Fusion 6x9s. These are all powered by 1 Pheonix Gold QX amp (Got it for free).
And to cap things off, I have 2 Power Acoustiks FUBR-12(12" sub w/ 700w RMS and 1800w peak, very heavy/high quality sub) in single-sealed boxes. Check them out here, these are powered by a Class-D Orion sub amp.
SQ is awesome, the highs are incredible and the bass shakes your brain to a pulp, but I'm having rattling problems (I do have some Dynamat in the trunk and doors) , the rear shelf is vibrating against the rear window and you can really hear it, also my license plate and trunk latch are rattling like crazy. Looking for a solution.
Good luck on your purchase

adam- If you go alpine give rod a shout. I personally think alpine is a pain. Seems like they do not interface with other brands easily. Anyway Rod set me up with alpine main amps, cd changer, head unit etc. Speakers/TV/DVD/subwoofers cheap for my 4 door dodge. Rod has a car stereo store you know.
