i have one and the billet housing.not junk. but calibration and reading is complicated and you must take your time to set up right or it will be "off". I like mine. i would go ahead and get the housing or it will get trashed by limbs or rollovers.

I love mine. It's not working at the moment for some reason. I got a pretty good soaking with salt water spray, so I'm thinking that might be the cause. When I say not working I should clarify that too .. it's not reading anymore, but the unit itself still works fine.
I was a little surprised at the size of it when it arrived. I guess I just figured it would be around the size of a grizzley dash or something .. LOL .. anyway .. I think it's great gear. Mine cost $184 delivered, but that's in Canadian Dollars.
Setting it up correctly is very important. You need to measure your actual tire height, or your speeds will be off. The installation details are all given with the unit and setup instructions as well. If you think your son is prone to crashes then i would def. suggest the billet protector ... I don't have it because that was as much as the speedo for me .. oiy!! but I don't ride so agressively to be in the situation of rolling my quad.

Awsome little unit. It reads pretty good for a digital. The batteries last about a year and a half. The hook up and mounting is a piece of cake.
NLWarrior01- I suggest that you try cleaning the magnet and sensor off. They tend to attract debris which can disrupt the signal

I had the hub and all off last night to see if the sensor was damaged or dislodge or dirty. It was a little dirty, as was the magnetic rotor bolt so I cleaned both up and still it doesn't work ... I'll have to e-mail trail tech today and see what they will do for me. The unit won't be a year old until the middle of July so hopefully it's covered under warranty.
Thanks for the advice tho!!

Well, here's another feather in Trail Tech's cap. I emailed them this morning with my problem and had a response back within 3 hours. I'm very impressed with the response time since I'm probably at least 2.5 hours ahead of them in time zones. They mentioned a few things to check, which I already had checked last night (sensor alignment, cleanliness, sensor spacing ...) and said that if those things were all ok, then it was most likely a bad cable. The requested my postal address so they could send me a new cable under warranty.
There are still some good companies out there

I have had my trailtech for over a year now and I love it. It is a nice feature to see your speed, time, and how many miles you have ridden. I havnt had any problems untill the beginning of this rifing season. My trailtech would work and sometimes wouldnt. I narrowed it down to the cable. I called trailtech and explained my problem and the guy told me that sometime the cables go bad and he sent me a new one the next day. I am supposed to get it tomorrow or monday and I will replace it and everything should be fine. I give great kudos to trailtech. There customer service is awesome. They were extremely professional and he told me if I had any problems to call back. I love it when a company backs there product. So for those out there considering getting a trailtech, I think its a great investment, but get a metal housing for it, it will protect it.

I was also thinking about getting a speedometer. about how much would a trail tech cost with the metal housing?
(in U.S. dollars $$ please)
