NEAR FATAL DECISION

Whatever you do stress to your kids the dangers of crossing the highway(besides illegal). I had a wreck wed night(9-8-99) because a 11yr old kid pulled out of his drive way on his ATV with out looking or stopping !! I was able to avoid him by only inches at the most. If I hadn't hit the brakes when I did I would have surely killed him. I ended up in a fairly deep ditch(no damage luckly) and had to be towed out and call the Highway Patrol. The kid is fine and so am I now(still a little shaking), but he is in some big trouble. They charged him as a juvenile and he will have to go to court. He's lucky that's the only lesson he has to deal with !!
I just bought a new Honda 450S last weekend and this has put a whole new light on riding for me !

I guess this is one big problem that some people forget about when they teach their kids to ride. A child who is a great rider out on the trails may not have enough life experience to make decisions when they aren't being watched closely by a parent or other adult.
That's probably why we have a driver age limit for cars. A child of 13 or 14 may be physically able to get in the family Tarus and drive it down the road, but I'm not sure I want to be around when they make decisions about pulling out into traffic!!! Yipes!
I hope the parents of this kid look at it as his one "lucky" break, and keep him off the quad when they're not around!

They say that they have told him MANY times not to go across the road. I think that is the only one they own so I wonder if they have ever taught him anything on it. His step dad said this his mom was "an old harley girl and didn't really like helments" so I wonder.
My mom would have sold mine if I had did that. I am looking for a good used one, I was hoping his would do that.
