2 ATV's - 72 hours apart, Nov. 1998

The story is really long and wild - but here goes!!

Friday nite, 50 mph winds howling, 3 in the house all woke up to something @ 3am. Rolled over thinking its just the wind. Found out next morning that it was MY 300ex w/ white bros pipe firing up. Neighbor was up and couldn't figure what I was doing at 3 AM with my quad!! Who would of thought!!

Called Sherriff, they did a "crappy" investigation. I had to work that day and found out more details that nite as to which direction they headed.

Had personal friend that was a sherriff ( not the investigating one that came for the report) and he said that there was a string of ATV thefts going on. He wanted me to leave the wifes ALMOST new Recon in the shed, and that he would do survielance on the shed. I decided to do some anti-theft wiring on the Recon.

Sat nite- NO sleep!! Dogs were barking ALL nite, saw flashlights in the woods near the shed, called Sherriff buddy - didnt find anything.

Sunday nite - Buddy stays in woods with night vision binoculars - dogs bark - NO SLEEP!!

Monday night- Buddy cant do surveilance but promised to do "drive-by's". Wife and I, and other neighbors stay up. ALL EYE'S ON SHED!! 2:15 am, I need SLEEP!! lay on the bed. Next thing I know - the phone rings at 2:40 am, Neighbor buddy sez - someone just drove across his yard with a ATV pulling a lawncart with a motorcycle in the cart!! I look out my window - shed doors are still shut, cant be our ATV but it's someones!! Hang up phone and can hear it going down the road - turning a corner, heading out of town. Immediatly, I call Sherriff's office, ask for buddy. He just walked in door - just left my house 10 min ago. We headed out to try to find ATV - listen for it on the road. Sherriff Buddy showed up within 5 minutes (normally a 12 minute ride), Went to neighbor's house, followed tracks from across street to where he picked up this motocycle. ( all the time thinking that Recon is still in shed) Head back to house, walk back to shed - STOLEN- Recon and lawn cart!!!! Sherriff buddy sez he was here 10 min before I called, we figure that the theft was in progress as he shown his alley lights on the shed. ( he didnt get out of the car)

Found out the next morning that the bike was stolen Friday night also. That guy called the State Police - I called the Sherriff- guess what, neither agency knew nothing about either theft. The bike wouldn't start, being repaired by owner, so the guy stashed in a barn across the street from his house. What stinks, is that WE were able to track the bike from the theft on Friday on TUESDAY morning!! (tracks lead stright to the barn!!) Just shows that the SP didnt do a good job either investigating!!!!

Eventually caught the guy, he was selling them for drugs. Sold Recon for $150. We got that back, but it was so scratched up, and beat up - wife wanted new one and we replaced it.

Mine was never found!!

Over 30 ATV's and bikes stolen in 3 county area over 4 months.

Thank Goodness for ATV insurance!!!!

late September 1997
My owm fault, left my 4 mo old 1997 honda fourtrax 300 in the back of my truck with bi-fold aluminum ramps folded underneath.Left my truck backed up at the female friend I was visiting front door.
Boy was I dumb, I could have driven 10 mins away and secured my honda in a locked garage guarded by 2 german shepards.so at 6 am i awake and my honda is gone.I call the local police and argue with a officer who arrives and tells me with a 2 minute gaze around, "its gone" "here is where they loaded it". Well, the apartment complex is shaped in a horse shoe pattern, surrounded by woods. After the nice policeman leaves, I discover my aluminam ramps BEHIND the bulding where my honda was taken, leaning against the building. I knew then that the %^^%$##% that stole my quad did not have a truck to transport it, and my quad was somewhere hidden in those surronding woods.I called my riding buddies and 12 hours after i figured my honda had been stolen, we found it hidden in those woods covered with a tarp, and the thief or thieves, had attempted to camoflage it with branches and leaves. It was intact they did pop the ignition but were unable to get it started, but i counted myself lucky. I will never be that stupid again, thank GOD for my friends.
oh yea, after recovering my honda, i called the police back to report my stolen quad was found, and not only was my machine entered wrong in the computer, (vin entered wrong) by 1st reporting officer, but they called for a sergent to release my honda to me as i didnt have proof of ownership ON ME, (even though i was the reporting party) but the police were nice enough to help load it in my truck
and did seem to be glad for me.

Bigorange,
Man, im really sorry about the quads getting stolen, but, that part about staying the the woods with NVG's made me LMFAO! That woulda have been great to catch the fools then with the NVG's with them least expecting it.

Itrak,
Bet that taught you a valuable lesson, and made your heart jump into your throat when the quad was gone from your truck.

Im am deffinatly going to have to get some insurance so I can rest easy at night. Mine is in a garage locked up, there is no way to get it out the back door (to small and also locked) and it would take the thieves forever to get the garage door open, dang thing likes to stick + its locked as well.

I read a post about that one guy getting his raptor stolen then found again. Some of the following replies had good ideas in it, like for instance, taking off the wheels, chaining it to something that cannot be sawed threw or broke.

My suggestion for ATV secruity, garage or shed, BIG FREAGIN chain and lock, taking wheels off, dog security (lol), putting heavy or non-movible obsticles in path, INSURANCE!, removing spark plugs, leave gas tank empty, wheel locks, removing other key parts ie: handlebars, carb (if ya wanted?).

Someone should start a topic about "ATV Security" How to Secure your ATV properlly, would be a good topic starter. Ive been posting to many posts this week so will let someone else handle the task.

I usually leave mine in reverse, my dog is outside she barks at anything that moves at night.
We have insurance on it. My dad bought a baby monitor and put 1 end outside in the garage and the other beside him when there were a number of garage break-ins around our area in the summer so if we heard a noise we would have caught the thief, the baby monitors work good, they are clear so no fuzz noises, you guys should try one. And the noise it picks up is amazing, we can hear cars pass on the road when the door is shut in the garage and the road is at least 50ft away.

Insurance is a GOOD thing, but not understandable. For instance, my ATV buddy's homeowners covers his 6 quads, but mine doesnt!! His only covers theft from the house "property" and doesnt cover theft from MY trailer. But with my insurance, mine is covered 24/7, if I wreck it, if you wreck it, covers your quad, my quad, and hospital bill, falls off my trailer, or yours. Doesnt matter - it covered, for $6/month each. They did try to screw with me on the claim, but I didnt give tooo much and made out ok. ( Still wasnt worth it)

As for putting stuff in the way, unless its a MACK truck, it wont stop them!! Locks only keep the honest man out!!

I have gone as far as to take the wheels off and put them in another bldg. That way they have to bring their own tires to ride!!

I havn't had any problem of theft from any of my shops(live on dairy, lots of shops!) after I put my quad back together I have had one door Pad locked and the other has a John Deere 4020 in the way, so I figure that will double as a Mack Truck. I do however need to figure a securing system for it when its in my Trailer, guess I go buy some new Chain!

I didnt have mine stolen , But A year ago I was sellling an 85 4x4 truck . A guy called me and asked if Id be interested in trading my truck for a 95 warrior . I said sure . He brought it down to my house early on a sunday morning . I didnt give it a good look over cause it was early and my anniversary . 3 ays later I went to fill out a ORV registration and found the VIN number remover from the frame . I had written down the guys license number from his truck just in case ogf any monkey business . Also had his sell phone number on the caller ID on my cell phone . Needless to say he was found a week later . I got my truck back . The 4-wheeler was impounded . They found the owner but it had been stolen from him like a year before that . Nothing ever happened to the thieves . I never got restitution for the towing of my truck . The owner had insurance so the insurance company took it . It eneded up being a 97 . Was traced by the engine number . I tried to but it as it was real nice , but the insurance company said it had to be tore apart for parts since there was no VIN number . I find it really hard to believe this machine was tore apart . I did the right thing with this stole n machine and I lost more than the thieves .

I have never had one stolen and hope I never do. I try to take some precautions.
1) INSURANCE....if someone really wants it, doesn't matter how much security I have on it, they're going to get it.
2) I keep it parked in a corner in my garaged, chained through 4 studs. My truck stays parked next to it, so in order to get it out my truck would have to be moved. And if I go out of town I will move our car next to it.
