SuperWinches Any Good??
#1
Im going to buy a winch for my Polaris Xplorer and I can get a Superwinch ATV 2000 for $191 not including the install kit. A Warn 2000lb winch is 300 bucks. My question is..Is the Superwinch a good one are should I pay the extra 100 bucks and get the Warn. I rarly ever need a winch but I dont want to buy a peice of junk either.

Andy_G, both SuperWinch and Warn produce quality products of high value.
SuperWinch and Rule winches were tested in the "Tellico Winch Test" feature article accessible from the ATV Connection home page.
SuperWinch has just released a "Rocker Switch Retrofit Kit," Part # 2200, consisting of a heavy-duty switch with dust covers (2), now under test by the ATV Connection. (The SuperWinch X2 3000 # winch is also under test, along with the SuperWinch remote solenoid package.)
I have used Warn winches on my trucks; my SuperWinch ATV1500 winch, now mounted on my Bayou 300 4X4, has been in continuous service since 1978 (factory option for 1978 Subaru 4x4 station wagon). Augmented by a ****** block, the ATV1500 has never failed me, and I've been pretty stuck.
Concluding, both Warn and SuperWinch are good; "Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer cherce."

P.S. Don't suppose anyone printed out or otherwise saved the old "Warn vs. SuperWinch" thread from the previous Forum format?

I think the warn looks better and thats just about all. Seems like some superwinchs don't have a freespool option, but don't quote me on that. I have a winch, but have only used it 4 times in a year. For the money, the Superwinch is a good way to go. Depends on how much you will actually use it I guess. Both get good reviews. I only paid $100 for my Warn 2000 as part of a promo, but If I was going to just buy one, I couldn't see spending $300 for something that I would rarely use.

I’ve had an X1-F Superwinch 2000 pound pull freespooling winch on my Bayou 400 for 4 years. I have used it to extricate myself from deep mud on only two occasions. But on those two occasions, it easily pulled me out, and was worth every penny I paid for it. I have also used it to move fallen trees from the trail numerous times.
When I got the winch it had the standard motor mounted operating switch. This switch served me well and never failed, but it was inconvenient to use. A year ago I replaced it with a CMP handlebar mounted operating switch that I bought from Shade Tree. The CMP switch failed repeatedly under even light duty loads.
I called Shade Tree to report my dissatisfaction. They said the had had several other failures, but that the company had redesigned the switch to use heavier contacts and they would send me a free replacement. The free replacement worked no better than the first one, it too failed under load, and finally failed completely. The rocker switch no longer rocks from side-to-side no matter how much thumb pressure I apply. I am going to go back to the motor mounted switch.
As far as comparing the Superwinch to the Warn, and as long as you’re comparing each company’s 2000 pound pull models, they are mechanically alike as two peas in a pod. Both units use a 1.3 HP motor to drive a 123-to-1 planetary reduction gear setup to turn the winch drum.
The bottom line is save some money and go with the Superwinch, it’s a great buy. But don’t bother with the optional handlebar mounted rocker switch, improved or not, it simply doesn’t work.

Both of our Superwinch models have performed very well. The X1-F and ATV 2000 have worked extremely well. Some say they are noisy, but like who cares, they are on an atv anyway. They both free wheel also. I have had the handlebar switch on both units, the original since 1995, 300 4x4, (X1-F) and the new one last year, '99 SP500 (ATV 2000). I don't know who makes their switches (both look the same to me) except they are marked 2233 Superwinch switch kit, but I mounted them both in the upright position, right next to the handgrips. We use the winch and handelbar switch to raise and lower the snowplow blade. In an everage plowing session I raise and lower the blade approximately 55 times because of the way I have to dispose of the snow for our parking area. I have never had a winch or switch failure since December of 1995. They both perform very well.

I run/ran a Superwinch 1500 that I was very proud of.. it only failed once because of repeated sloshings in the Sabine river. We're talking YEARS of being dunked and ground into mud. I took the motor apart and cleaned everything up and it continues to work flawless today.
About that cheese-ball switch they sent with it. (black box type switch with a yellow thumb rocker!!) DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, and throw it in the trash can. I put a Warn switch on it (mounted on the front rack) and never had a problem.
We use winches 10-20 times a day when we ride, so dependability IS a MAJOR factor, the winch is great, the switch sucks!!!!
Good Luck!!!...

Thanks Mudmachine
I ordered my superwinch ATV 2000 last night. I got it from Jegs for $191 which I feel is a very good price. Where would be a good place to get the better warn switch and how much should I expect to pay? I may just get a heavy duty switch from a hardware store.
