Street legal atv questions
#1
I live in Mississippi and own a Raptor. I have seen atvs on ebay forsale that were street legal in other states.
Can you make an atv legal for road use in Mississippi? I emailed The DOT and Highway Patrol office and still no answer.
What else beside DOT approved tires, horn, and helment do you need?
Do you have to have blikers or can you use hand signs? Mirrors?
What do you use to get a tag since I did not get a title when I bought my atv from dealer?

I would put EVERYTHING on it, one mirror would probably work, horn, signals for sure, license plate light, the whole nine yards.
Find the law on making a dirtbike legal and see what it says about the number of tires, atv should fall into the motorcycle catagory.
D.O.T. tires for sure though. D.O.T. Low/High beam also. 55w

You know of course most mfgr's make one or more models of their quads legal for road travel, but these quad models are only sold overseas. They have horn, turn signals, and other things I'm not aware. Might try to hook up with an overseas forum to find out exactly how they differ. That could lead you to possibly finding a bolt on parts source. I would only do it with a utility quad, not a sports model though.
If it were me and I wanted to do it, I'd go to the person's office that would be responsible for actually approving the machine for street legality and ask them. Be sure and check with your insurance company. They may not insure it if driven on roads.

if its anything like the NY system, it will be a pain to get it to go through. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I know they want recepts for every little thing when it comes to having custom things legal on the roads. your state might be different, but keep track of everything in writing, I work with a guy that builds hot roads, and they want to see papers on the bolts and all that little stuff. I'm pretty certain Mississippi isn't going to be anything like New York when it comes to making something street legal. And there is a big difference in making a car or truck street legal and an ATV. Like I said, the first thing to do it go to the guy that will actually do the inspecting at the registration office. Tell him what you want to do and ask them what you need to do. Either that or put a windshield, turn signals and and horn and show up - don't say anything except I'm here to register my vehicle. If you need an inspection, get one. Carksdale is a small place. I'm betting you know the guy that will be doing the approval anyway.
As for turn signals and the like, go to motovan.com. They've got them.

most likely, its nothing compared to NY.
SEVENKMAN, do u know some of the major things to make a street legal in NY? I know you pretty much have to rebuild the hole bike, but i'm just interested.

no, i don't know about the atv for the road. all I know is some guys I have helped with street rods had a hell of a time. I know a couple people with wrecked bikes that they picked up cheep, they ended up regestering it in NH for the first year until the title cleared, and then the second year having it, they could get it regestered in NY. sorry I couldn't help.
