Default how to avoid costly shipping fee on parts??

So ive ordered a few small parts, brake pads, air filter lid etc. of ebay (I livein Canada). I have never been charged duty or any other fees that were not listed. The other day I ordered graphics from alba and when the UPS guy came i had to pay him and extra $58 for other fees. Is this a duty charge, why havnt i paid it before? do u not have to do it on ebay? the pakage was lighter than other things i have ordered. Is there anyway to avoid this from happening again??

For me shipping on smaller parts are only around $10. Even a big box of plastic front and back only costed me $18. I always pay shipping same time i send payment.
I buy off ebay and shipping for me is always cheep.

Anytime I order something from ebay, I get the total cost of shipping before I'll bid.

Too many times a bargain price item has a hefty shipping charge.

Just like my pocket bike. Costed $9 bucks but charged about $200 to ship it when it really only would cost about $40 to ship.

I don't know what it is but many prefer not to ship to Canada. I think has to do with customs. You might want to look it up on UPS.com. Shipping in between states is inexpensive for us. I've even shipped Axles & A Arms.

In the future for small packages under four pounds ask for shipping by U.S. Postal Service "Air Mail Letter Post". Its cheap !!!!! When the vendors use UPS, Fedex or other courier services they use a Customs Broker. The Postal Service provides this at no cost. It makes a big difference in the shipping cost to Canada. If a vendor will not ship by the Postal Service just let them know thats not acceptable and go on to the next one.

usps can do more weight than that. They gave me my tire chains 2 sets and that was at least 15lbs probably more.

Air mail letter post is a cheaper service for packages under four pounds. Above that weight the packages come parcel post and the cost is higher. Sorry for the confusion.

I ship parts every day, and quite often to Canada. UPS while great domestically is a ripoff going international. We always use USPS Global Express for Canada. They somehow get through customs faster, and their brokerage fee is $5 whereas UPS can be 15 to 25 dollars just for that part. Your shipping charges consist of (1) the actual shipping, (2) the brokerage fee which is a crossing customs type of deal, and (3) your actual import duty.

When buying on ebay, ask your seller beforehand how they ship to Canada and request USPS. The up front shipping rate might seem higher, but all said and done it'll be faster and cheaper. Also, your seller might declare the value lower like at his cost which will help you with duty.

The guy said he wanted to cut costs !! Global priority is a very expensive service. Go to the U.S. Postal Service web site and compare a two pound Air Mail letter Post package and a Global Priority Package and the difference is actaully shocking.
