Anyone have any homemade add-ons for their atv? Boxes for racks, rack ext. etc. I use a pepsi crate on the front rack to carry items, storage box on back for gas, rain gear etc. I have also seen antenas on front to knock back briers and spider webs.

For my YFZ 450,

I'm bending up a small aluminum box that will fit in a 6-pak rack to carry stuff there, instead of a backpack.

I'm also making another that will hang directly below my 6-pak rack. it's a little bigger to carry more stuff.

I'll post pics when its done.

Well, I finally competed the boxes for my YFZ 450. As I stated above here are the pics. I have a PRM six pack rack as seen her.

This really isn't "redneck", I tell my wife it's "craftsmanship at it's best!!"

I made these boxes out of aluminum I had in the garage. (I am always building something and have alot of "stuff" available) I did need to run to Home Depot to buy a piece of 1"x1/8" aluminum flat stock to finish the 'rack" for the lower box and some screws of course.

The upper box is the size of a six pack cooler and approx 8"x10"x3-1/2" tall. I made it to be a tight slide fit so as not to move around when riding.

The lower box is 12"x11"x3-1/2" Everything is aluminum inlcuding the hinges.
I needed to hand make the corner pieces because I could not get access to a 'real' sheet metal break to bend tabs like I wanted. By the way, Harbor Freight has a 30" table top break for $40. Perfect for projects like this. Though you will need some long vise grips or c-clamps to keep the metal from moving around too much.

The top box is strapped in just like a cooler would be. The bottom box has the 'L-Shaped keepers' as you can see in the pics. I have tested them both and they do not move!! Even when riding hard in the desert, jumping, you name it. They are dust and water tight so things stay clean and dry! They hang far enough back so as to not interfear with the swing arm. (and the lower box is moved to the left to keep the exhaust from cooking everything) I plan on fabbing up a mount for the tail light to hang under the rack. All plug an play. The lower rack is removed with six screws when I don't need it. Like at the track!

In the small box I can carry:

10' x1" tow strap
Jumper cables
Tire slime
Tire repair kit w/ 3 CO2 carts.
Pocket Tire Gauge
Leatherman tool
Folding knife
Small mirror
Zip Ties
A 'real' spark plug wrench
Spark Plug (gapped)
15A blade fuse (YFZ owners know what this is for)
Grease rag
Electrical tape
1" sinch strap
Small binoculars

The other box can be used for other stuff I may want to take on longer, day trips like a rain suit, some oil, sweatshirt, anything that will fit inside.

You may ask why did I do this? Why not get a UTV that has alot more room? Well, I like Sport quads better. and when I get older I most likely will have a UTV. Until then, I ride mostly in the desert and I ride solo alot or with others who carry nothing but a Camelpak. I do have an old Ski Patrol waist pack too, for first aid. I don't plan on using any of this stuff. And now that I have taken the time to build it; I probably never will. But just in case........ I at least will have something to work with!

PS: I will be seaking renumeration if a manufacturer starts selling these...
Maybe I will be able to retire then!!

I mounted one of those air horn can things to the handle bar with black electrical tape but got the top broke off while doing the stuck dance, back to the drawing board. Was cool while it lasted.

I made fishingpole carriers out of pvc pipe for mine, worked great until I went under a tree limb with a pole in it, tore the carriers off and broke the pole. oh well wasn't my fishing pole
