We have 4 out of 5 insured. I guess you can only put 4 on one policy and I like a little gamble.

When I bought my new Raptor the salesman said "lo-jac" is too large to hide on an atv. I don't know if that is true or not, but I have heard it is 5 grand.....

 

My Dad's Outlander is insured... it spend most of the summer in the barn at our farm anyways. My LTR doesn't have insurance... in Ontario through my parent's insurance company they won't insure it because me (the main drive of the vehicle) isn't 16 yet, and I am unlicensed. So if I get into an accident on the trails I have to pay for my own medical bills, the other dudes medical bills, and damage to the quads (unless it is his fault I guess?).

So when it's up at my cottage I just put a 1/2 inch bicycle lock around the frame and other components and then wrap it around a pole on the cottage. But we never get trouble up there anyways. There is NO way that I would leave it there with just a lock for a week by itself though! I think that if I really needed to I could, my neighbor is a cool guy he could watch it, but I would be so nervous. Works fine though.

 

I have had my shed broken into 3 times. The would be thieves did manage to get two dirt bikes out of the shed and out into teh back yard. I heard them try and start the one, and when they heard me coming on the quad, they freaked and ran for the car. I found them two days later, and my son took care of business a few days later. After that, I started putting disk brake locks on all of them and chained them inside the shed. The disk brake lock works great. About the only way they are going to get them is to carry them, and few of the punks around here are up to lifting anything more than a video game controller. They did a fair amount of damge to the shed, but only broke an ignition switch one time with a screw driver. (Real sophisiticated) After the property owner behind me put up a chain link fence, the theives stopped coming around.

 

My shed hasn't been broken into since I put 2 padlocks and better hasps on it and reinforced the door with 1/4" steel. It was only broke into once and they broke into more than 50 sheds and garages in my neighborhood in one crime spree. Suspiciously, my next-door neighbor who does't even have a door on hs shed got NOTHING stolen, while everyone else was broken into. They stole my tools and lawnmower and several others, but not his. This was the year before all my ATVs started getting ripped off when he's driving a flatbed wrecker.

 

Hmmm, I hope your neighbor isn't on your Christmas card list.

I did the same thing you did. two hasps, un-cutable locks, steel reenforcement on the inside and blind carriage bolts etc.

They took the whole end wall off the shed the last time. that is why I started chaining them together and to the wall when they were inside the shed. Even if they cut the connection to the wall, they are all connected in a loop so they are going to have to carry 4 of them at the same time. I even put a cut resistant cable on them when they are on the trailer now too. They could try and take the truck or the whole trailer, but that is why I have alarms, locks, and insurance from Smith and Wesson...

One tip.... Put one of the locks up as high as you can get them on the door. It keeps them from gaining any leverage.

I put one hasp at the bottom of the door because the door didn't close very good and it was easy to get a lot of leverage there. Carriage bolts through both halves of both hasps and the steel reinforcements. Cariage bolts on the door side of the hinges too, but on the other side of the hinge it's a bunch of 3" drywall screws with the heads drilled out so no one can unscrew them and take the doors off. Too bad my ATV won't fit in there. It's chained to the trailer and it has locks on both wheels so it's a pretty good anchor.

 

All of my Atv's have alarms. they came with. then my gun is my second insurance.

 

I wish we didn't have to do this, but not everyone is a good citizen I guess. Although I live in what is considered a low crime area, you never know. One of the problems here in Virginia also is that you do not have any kind of registration program to keep up with stolen bikes. You get a title from the DMV, but rarely does anyone keep it current. I think if people were to have to register them, that would cut down on the number of guys selling them cheap to make a buck or two. Usually around here anyway, it turns out to be some kids joyriding. What they do not know is that since most ATV;s are worth over 1K, it becomes a felony offense. Sure hate to see a kid have to sufffer for the rest of their life over a moment of stupidity, but I am not going to just let them walk away from it either. I guess this should be a lesson to those that would commit such a crime. In the old days, they would hang you for stealing a man's horse.
