Back firing is usually because of a lean condition. If you have decent compression (over 100 psi) good spark, fuel to the carb, then possibly it's a crank seal problem. A leak down test can check if it's that or a head gasket or base gasket leaking, etc,or you can simply pull the drive clutch and replace the crank seal behind it as it's usually the one that gives the most trouble on the 400s.

If the seal behind the drive clutch is leaking there usually is an oily mess around this area if it's leaking bad enough. Plus you have another seal behind the flywheel and stator that can be leaking. You can rebuild the master cylinder with a piston kit OR find a new one on ebay. Dirt Cheap Yamaha & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse You can try a mity vac on the rear caliper to see if it helps bleed this system. If you can't get a firm pedal then possible that the master is leaking.Dirt Cheap Yamaha & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse A 15 year old machine regardless of make or model will need some work. Even if a 15 year old kid didn't hit a tree.

Gonna buy some parts next week got a 49.5 hour check so I can afford a few things I'll probably buy a gasket kit and seals and I checked earlier today and all around the oil injector pump is oily but not so much behind the clutch area

Sounds like it needs this too if fuel is loading up the engine. May be the main problem you're having.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Scrambler-400-1997-2001-Carb-Carburetor-Kit-/380717280350?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58a484ac5e&vxp=mtr

On any 2 stroke or 4 stroke for that matter that came into the shop for a non starting condition I'd check for compression and spark first. If they were ok, I'd look at fuel supply to the carb. If it's pouring gas into the exhaust pipe like yours I'd install the carb kit and eliminate it as a problem.Don't just try to clean a carb as it may not help. If it still has problems on running then you may have to go deeper and either replace the crank seals or do a leak down test to see where you stand.

I assumed that it was just letting the gas on through the cylinder but not burning it could it b weak spark or could the stator b going bad previous owner didn't put a gasket in they flywheel half and it's a bit rusty and it seized the starter had a little mud in it and taking the starter off with out a clutch pulled to remove the belt housing is a pain in the backside the starter was new tho wen they put it on and forgot to scrape the old gasket pieces off and didn't put the gasket on and one bolt on the bottom souls I ohm check everything and pull the flywheel and clean the case half
