FRS Radios have questions need answer
#1
I see there was a previous question about 2-way radios and I need some more answers if possible.
1) There are different name brands and which is the better unit that will deliver the best bang for the buck?
2) I like the voice activated feature, but will it come on during the operation of the bike and possibly with the noise from air passing by the mike at higher speeds?
3) I have seen a mike that fits around the ear with a mike boom that reaches to front close to your mouth. Also a PTT (pust to talk) unit with an earphone for the ear and a mike that dangles down by your neck. The other alturnative is a mike and speaker combination as used by our local police force. As I wear a helmit which is the best soultion and have you used either one of these devices?
4) I ride in a group of 6 or more and it would be nice to split up change channels but still monitor the other groups channel is that possible?
5) I guess the next major factor is the distance these radios will transmit in thick bush. I have ridden with other fellows and they have helmet models mounted to the helmet and they only seemed to work down the line of sight as in down a cutline. This is only an observation maybe not true for all helmet mounted models just the ones I have seen. I like the ability to change frequencies and the FRS radio seems to be the unit as apposed to short wave. If they work even for a mile that would be ok to?
If you guys use these units I would really appreciate some advice thanks gentlemen.

I have the motorola talk about 280s with the earbud speaker and mike. As you describe the mike hangs down or clips onto something. You either push the talk button on the mike (which can be difficult with gloves or just push the talk button on the radio itself and then talke into the mike.
I find it easier to hear with the ear bud. Not big on vox as the noise from the quad or you humming can activate it and if you talk fast you could be two word into your sentence before it transmits.
.... ...... nning into trouble on the trail?
or
uhhhhhh I am running into trouble on the trail. so you don't miss the sentence.
One other thing. Get on with a call button you can press. You can't always understand what is said due to noise, speed and concentration. However, you can hear the call tone real easy then pull to the side of the trail and take in the conversation.

My buddy and I experimented with standard FRS radios from Cobra, Motorola, and South Bell (walmart). The cobra's with some special cables were usable when we were going slow, as the ignition noise took it out. We had to use roger tones to communicate.
We bought a set of chatterbox GMRS radios. They are awesome. However, you do need an FCC license, and the VOX works good until I go around 35 miles per hour, then I need PTT.

TraxterXT,Ecbaatz,Rainman,
Thanks for the quick response I like the Motorola the best like you say even if it is a little pricy. Here in Alberta the brand I like are the $129, and $149 ones that is Canadian of course. The cheaper one is a T289 and the other is a T6000 I do believe and it comes with rechargable batteries and a charger for $149. I think I will go for the more exspensive one with more features and the batteries. Now all I have to do is talk to Santy Claus and persuade her to the benifits
