i think etgs are a great idea, idont have one yet but i need one for my current project. when i was runnig methenol i had a hard time reading plugs and i smooked numrious top ends -led to smoking my krank and rod berings,by knowing if your bike is too lean before you explode your top end will save you time, money, and fustration,i think your etg should read no more than 1100 degrees,1inch away from exhuast flange

Instead of spending all the money on an egts you could simply buy a temp sensor (Type K Thermocouple, isolated junction). Thread this into a spare pipe you have, about 6 inches from exhaust port, traslates to about 1-2 inches from exhuast flange depending on your engine. These sensors change their resitance depending on temp. so you can hook up a digital ohm meter ($30 from radio shack and even cheaper else where). The temp sensor specs will tell you what ohm value corresponds to what temp value. If you are just going to use this for tuning purposes it is a hell of alot cheaper to do it this way, if you want it constantly connected to your machine spend the money and buy a egts. JMO

FYI, egt's do not give you all necessary information. In fact, if you are experiencing preignition (not a good thing), the exhaust temps may actually go down. This is due to the fact that a preignited mixture has a longer time to cool down before reaching the exhaust probe. Head temperature probes can give you some warning for detonation. Are you using at least a blend of race fuel? If not, you may have detonation (even in a stock 500). What does the wasted piston look like? Having your new piston ceramic coated is added insurance ($25-$35). BTW, I install a Digitron egt off my snowmobile for testing purposes and then remove it for general riding. Talk to the pipe manufacturer for proper probe placement since all are a little different. If it is placed too close to the piston, raw gas will cool the probe. If it is too far away, the exhaust may have radiated some of its heat away.
