Need More Power! Upgrade or Buy Bigger?
#1
My son has a stock 2002 Predator 90 and we need more power Scottie... I’m a simple shade-tree mechanic / computer weenie learning to be a quad mechanic! Can anyone tell me where I should begin?
Should I even waste my time on this 90 or should I trade it in for a bigger quad and invest my money into it? My son is 11 years old and 135 lbs… He’s raced 3 races and definitely needs more power!
Lets hear some opinions from experience! Is bigger better? Or should I give him more power with this Predator 90?

If he needs more power than a Predator 90 now he will soon outgrow any mods you can do. At 11 years old, my opinion is he is ready for a bigger quad. Sell the the 90 get your money out of it (the market is hot for used quads around Christmas). He will be able to ride a bigger quad till about 16.

I like Honda, but everyone is entitled to thier own opinion. I would suggest the you go with a 250cc. I do know that the 250ex has an auto clutch and is great to learn on. Polaris also makes a nice auto 250cc. I know this sounds like a big step going from a 90cc - 250cc, but if your son is experienced he will do just fine on it and can definately grow into it. I'll tell you just like I tell everyone have him sit on a few different models and go with the one that fits him best.
If he is racing however i think there are limits to how big a quad he can race for his age. You might try this question in the racing forum, might get more info there.

Blaster would be a good choice. Price is right and they are reliable. My only concern is how big of a quad is allowed for that age group to race. I would check that first.

Very good feedback gentlemen... I agree, I think I'd prefer a bigger quad for him also! I saw some sweet Blaster deals on Ebay for less than $2k
I called Whiplash Racing and there is actually no restriction on the size of the quad he can be on, because the size of the quad determines the class he'll be racing against... 205cc's is the biggest quad he can have and still stay in the Mini/PeeWee division (age range from 8yrs to 16+), anything over that he'll advance to the big atv's which are mostly young adults and men.
After discussing this with my son, we're ready to go for the bigger quad...
Thank you gentlemen!

I agree with all that has been said.
the blaster would be a great kid racing quad (and getting used to a clutch would be good,,,especially at an early age)
the 250ex or z250 would be a great all around kid quad.
Your right,,,blasters are cheap,,,,it shouldnt hurt the wallet too bad.
