250r running hot??
#1
just got done breaking in my new ct 310 complete power package on my mx r.
my entire engine has to be sent back to ct, do to a rod bearing explosion which just about trashed both my top end as well as the lower. any way back to my question, i think my engine was running hot. does anybody know the average temp of an r like mine. is it also normal to spit on the pipe and watch it fly off and dissaper as soon as it hits the pipe once the engine is up to operating temp?? this might sound like a silly question but i am not to familar yet with 250r's as well as my racing blaster that i stepped up from. I just noticed that it runs a lot hotter than my blaster does. it also burn't a hole plum throgh myrear fender were my pipe on my silencer was barely touching the plastic.. if any body has any suggestions o info i would greatly appreciate it. thank's

I would have to say that you are running very lean. When the engine produces excess heat it is because of a lean condition. Always jet to the point of blubbering, especially for break in, then lean up one jet at a time until it cleans up and sounds crisp. Break in produces more heat than normal operation because of the friction of the new parts wearing into their "groove".

the pipe will get very hot, as you described, because it has no water jacket or cooling fins...just the other day I touched a bare spot on my ankle on my pipe and today there is a large blister there..and this was just a touch of not even a second..when I get water on my pipe and its hot, it doesn't steam, it just flicks off to the side...

Well, I think that your rod bearing going is also a symptom here too. It could be a lack of oil, or as Brandon mentioned, lean jetting. Friction will be at it's highest during break-in, thereby generating more heat as well. I always go a minimum of two sizes larger on the main jet when breaking in a motor.
Check that your cooling system is working properly...good coolant, cap that pressurizes, radiator isn't all gooed up with dirt/mud/sand...
The pipe is going to get hot. There's exhaust gas passing by that is over 1000 deg F....while your pipe does'nt get THAT hot, what you describe doesn't sound too far out.
