Default XR 500 in a quad

Well my friend has an old XR500 and I was wondering if it would be worth it for him to pull it out of the bike and put it into a quad frame, like a 400ex frame or banshee frame. He doesn't have much money to work with so dont blast me about doing it with a dif engine or something like that. Are there any bad things about the engine being so old? Would it be a good enough power source to keep up with piped rappies at the dunes, that is with a few engine mods. Input would be nice

That motor fits pretty easily in a 400ex chassis (relatively). It has a very stong bottom end. You can put alot of power on it. It woudl keep up w/ a Raptor, espicially in a 40 pound lighter chassis.

ok I would not put the engine in unless you know it runs. Start it in the bike, My dad put a bike engine in a snowmobile and we used mostof the stuff from the bike. Worked good. Id go for it. You shouldnt need any mods to keep up with a raptor cause you would be so much lighter.

Well, its a really old engine, has anything changed majorly? It has a minor tranny problem and a burnt out clutch, we are going to crack to open and check out the tranny problem and replace clutch (if i can find one for a 79) The engine runs, he can start it up but it the clutch went out so he cant ride it. Is there anywhere we can get a 400ex frame + A-arms for cheap? After we fix the engine problems we want to try to keep the quad budget under 1200, can it be done?

Man, you could have a sick qaud on your hands!!! I wish you the best of luck.

Even with your budget, which will have to be on a strict diet, you could have something. Ebay, should have all you need for EX parts. Even the 300EX frame wouldnt be bad. Get what you can.

Invest mostly in your engine and tranny. go with the best. hopefully, the top doesnt have to be rebuilt, but if it does, that could be a start on mods

Just get what you can, dont worry much about the cosmetics.

Ya, if the top end needs redone, we will more than likely bump up the compression. I was thinking, if I could get the parts, 11:1 piston, new valve seats, new valves, fix tranny, new clutch, maybe try to get some bearing replacements (im guessing I could get them from a bearing dealer, not honda) He is a really good friend of mine that I like to ride with, but my warriors are 1000 miles away so he cant ride them anymore. I want to make him a descent machine. If the seats still look good and bearings feel fine, ill leave them in. My biggest concern is lining up the front sprocket with the rear sprocket, and keeping the quad relatively balanced. Also, the cost of suspension will more than likely throw us over budget, so once we get a frame ill probably look for some used stock shocks or something.

i think the 300x will be to small for a bike engine. My dad built a snowmobile with a bike engine ill put the pic in my page.

Would balancing the quad good be hard? or do you just line up the engine sprocket with the axel sprocket, and call it a day?

Also, im still looking into what frame to get, would I be able to put the engine in a 250r frame? Seems like those things are setup real nicely
