i was taking off my airbox lid on my 2000 blaster and decided to start it to see how it sounded. i let it run only a few seconds and shut it off. was that to long?do you think i messed up my carb. or anything like that?

no, i didn't take it off, just took off the lid and tried to start it. didn't remove the filter, so i didn't hurt anything. won't more dirt get in the filter and carb with the lid off?does it improve performance greatly?

As long as the air passes through the filter you have nothing to worry about. Opening up the breathing room can give you a lil more HP. You can buy or make aftermarket lids that have slits or holes in them. I'm no expert, but I heard something about if you do something like this you should rejet your carb for better performance. At any rate, the more air you breathe the better. Just be careful, mud and water are your two biggest enemies.

I wouldn't recommend running with an open air box without checking your jetting for a lean condition. The little time you ran it wouldn't damage any thing, but any extended riding could cause some major damage if the mix is seriously lean

Hot shoe has good advice. I would like to add to it. If you don't know about rejetting carburators or reading spark plugs, leave it alone. The performance advantage you get out of removing the airbox lid will not be noticable and you will end up cleaning the filter more ofter. Probably you need to clean the filter more often anyhow(we are all guilty of trying to get one more ride out of it at one time or another). My advice is start with the basics, get a manual for your machine and have fun. For me, maintaince is almost as much fun as riding. I take pride in the fact that our machines look and perform like new.

What i did to my blaster is i drilled 8, 1 inch holes in the airbox (it still lets it breathe but offers mud protection)and removed the snorkel. These holes allow more air to pass through in more places than just the snorkel. I then bought a LRD jet kit from LRD(i had also put on other mods that it was needed for). When it is ordered they ask you what youve done to the bike with mods and they send you a jet kit perfect for your bike for 28 bucks. Also like other people said in this forum, dont run your blaster with the lid off for a long time, it does change the mixture, but a few seconds arent going to hurt anything.
