Default 1st gear on new R

next door neighbor just got a new R yesterday and he already has to mess with the gearing. first gear is too tall. 2-5th gear is nice though. what have you guys used on your new R's to fix this?

Not sure if I'm buying that whole "first gear is to tall thing". I'll just have to wait and see. Part of it may be the Dunlop tires that are on there now. The people I've talked to said the Dunlops are a little hard to break free and it gives the impression that the first gear is to tall. They also want to grab like heck coming out of a corner. Just what I've heard though. I will know soon enough though. Some reviews said they had to slip the clutch to get rolling. Who doesn't slip the clutch a little when they are starting out. Maybe I am missing something.

Appreciate the info though, anyways what did your friend do and what was the overall effect?

It does seem too tall for 1st gear. It will be okay for mx or if you really rev it and slip the clutch a little it is fine. But I think rec-riders will find it too tall.

Ok, well there you have it... Not being a butt, just a little surprised.... Ok, give me more info please.... Are the tires part of the problem?
I heard they grab like a mother.... true, not true.... I guess the first bit of trail riding, I will find out how I like it.... Sometimes it is nice to creep up a hill though, so I could see it there... I would assume the front sprocket wouldn't be to hard to change... right?

How do you like the power, handling and feel? Thanks In advance.....

As I said for rec-riders i.e. riding tight trails, technical or low speed "lugging" it will seem too high. It isn't a problem of torque ( their is plenty) more a matter of it being geared taller in 1st. I also think that everyone thinks because it's a 4-stroke you can just dump the clutch and lug away. It is similar to the differance of my C-dale and a 400ex. The dale and the trx 450 love when you keep the revs up! The 400 can be lugged around all day long. Be aggresive with the TRX and you'll love it.

we ended up going to a junkyard and taking some sprockets off a 400ex. i think? i was wrecked and it was yellow i assume it was. and the gearing is now 13/39. is fine now. revs are a little higher but its all good. the new R is sweet. not as fast as the yfz but deffinatley higher up in my book.
