A stock 300EX is bullet-proof!!! It will basicly run forever if you change the oil, and clean the air filter on a regular basis.
Adding mods may affect the reliability of the machine in the long run. It's up too you to decide. Performance vs. Reliability.
Now I'm not saying that you lose "all" reliability after adding performance parts. But more care and up-keep is nessesary to keep the machine running up-to-par.
Here are some possible mods for you too consider:
High compression piston
Hotter cam
Black box mods
Ported Head
Valve Job
Exhaust system (head pipe)
Air filter
Modded airbox
Big Bore kit
Bigger carb

E-mail me and I can explain each part better and give you some dollar amounts on what to expect too pay for each mod.

see what i got below. reliability isn't balanced with performance as long as you don't go into engine and modifications that you wouldn't be able to do yourself. What i mean is that an air filter, pipe, new plates, nerfs, bumper, jet kit would not affect the atv's reliability. But by porting it, boring it, and replacing sprockets reliability in the long run will be affected.

Hey dude I looked at your site. Nice quads. I just wanted to tell you that if you run threw water and it gets that high up there, with a hot engine, you can crack your block. Just never hit water or put water on a hot engine. Well later dude,(don't think Im being an ***)Kenny
