if i put a performance cam in do i have or need to change the springs i have also heard if it is a regrind cam you should change the rockers because it is harder is this true does any one know

 

check with the manufacturer of the cam your looking at - all depends on the cam you plan on getting. Hot Cams can be used with the stock rockers, but some others require hardened rockers.

 

It depends on the machine you purchase the cam for and the grind of the cam.

 

Just a reminder; it's never a good idea to run old rockers/followers on a new cam. I've seen it done with no problems, but I don't recommend it.

 

The bottom line is that most aftermarket cams are regrinds. This means that they take an old cam and hard weld on the lobes and then regrind to get the profile they desire. If the cam has been hard welded and reground then hardened rocker arms are required. You would have to check with the manufacturer to find out how the cam is made or if they have a core charge you would have a pretty good idea that it's a regrind. There is nothing wrong with regrinds, just make sure you go with the hardened rockers. I do know for sure that HotCams are new and don't require hardened rockers...but

Take a close look as that statement. The decision is yours to make. If you don't see considerable wear on your rockers you might be able to get away with it...I did.

As far as valve springs...opionions vary. Depending on how aggressive of cam you get and depending on your riding style you may not need them. If you are up against the rev limiter all the time you probably are going to want them. I had a conversation with a service tech from HotCams and he told me that they were not a must for the Stage one cam unless you were up against the rev limiter. But he strongly recommended them for the stage two. I opted for them.

It's always a good idea to research these things as much as possible before you make a decision...you are on the right track. Just remember that everything you read is not true...it's an opinion.

 

Webcams are regrinds and recommend new valve springs for any application for many of their cams. Raptor comes to mind specifically. What kind of atv do you own and what brand and grind of cam are you looking at? If you have it narrowed down it would be easier to give you a straight answer.
