Aftermarket exhausts always say to repack the silencer packing every 20-30 hours or so. Is this really needed becuase I have talked to a lot of people who don't bother repacking and they say they don't lose much, if any horsepower and that the noise is the same.

i would repack i did to rm's fmf, and wow what a difference it made, it seemed alot quicker, and alot quieter, packing is cheap so repack, and dont go by hours go by if there is almost none in there repack, and if you have 50hrs on it for example and its full, leave the packing alone.

What would be the best way to get those steel rivets out of an aluminum can? Drill them or grind them? I wanna repack without trashing the muffler.

hmm, is it 4 or 2 i dont think i would cut rivets on a can, there arent 3 allen head screws on it? on both my fmf, and hmf there a screws, and that takes the end cap off, and reveals the packing, i dont really think you need to repack a 4 stroke pipe, because the exhaust is so "clean" it doesnt burn the packing away like on a two stroke, because of all the oil in 2 strokes exhaust.

It's a 4 stroke. Many pipes, like my R4 have riveted ends. Also, most 4 stroke pipes tell you to repack them at 20-30 hr intervals

One thing I know for sure, it won't have riveted ends once I am done with it!

i wouldnt bother to repack it then, being it is rivited, my hmf, has the 3 screws, and i have inspected after 1000mi the packing look new, hmf also stands a 10yr warrenty behind it, so i guess you never need to repack em

So is the new advertising scheme for the FMF Powerline claiming "no need to repack" just a trick then? It has no packing, but is that really necessary to find a way to not use any packing?

No, it is not a trick. Some pipes have some chambering and such that eliminates packing material.

I guess I phrased that wrong. I believe that they don't have a packing material, but is it really that significant of a feature on the pipe? I mean, is it a huge advantage over traditional packing or is regular packing going to last just as long as this special pipe?

instead of packing to quiet it down, it has different pieces of metal deflecting the gasses inside the can, and therfore when noises hit each other they cancel, this is what that new hmf eco system is all about.
