K&N or Foam?
#2
Foam is much better for trapping and keeping dirt out of the motor. The kn, can possibly get you more hp. Depending on jetting and an exhaust upgrade.
Theres a reason an outer wear prefilter is needed on kn.

We do hard a$$ desert riding. I have run K&N's with Outerwears on all my bikes for years, without the slightest problem. I have 3 filters for each bike: one on the machine, one in the wash, and one clean and oiled and ready to go. I change them out as soon as the Outerwears gets moderately dirty. That is usually no more than one days ride out here in the desert.
But, if you are the kind of person who neglects maintenance, stick with foam! The average rider is better off with foam. So, decide if you are average????

It also depends on what type of riding you are doing. Obviously the k&n fin style is better in the desert because it allows for better air flow. In the desert, you don't have to worry about water and mud, just sand. Fin style filters are better in drier conditions because you can tune the bike to gain a little more power. Foam filters are more ideal for wet and muddy conditions, as they keep them out better. I think they both require the same amount of maintenance. This is one crucial part on your machine that should be checked regularly.
