Default Will a sled carb work on a quad???

I dont know much about sleds. see I want to run nos and a bigger carb for my cr500 quad. I need Like a 42-43mm carb. the reasion I was thinking of running a sled carb is because they dont have float bowls and on my quad the stock carb dumps fuel out the over flow consitently because of the vibration.

What type of sleds have carbs without floatbowls? Every sled I have owned has had them. The reason that sleds need fuel pumps and ATV’s do not is because of GRAVITY. A sleds fuel tank is behind the engine and only slightly above while the ATV’s tank is directly above. Also, most sleds have multiple carbs and produce MUCH more power (thus needing more fuel).

Yeah, what he said. All my sleds carbs had float bowls. You can use a sled carb but you will probably need to change ALL the jets, including the needle.

Just to state a small fact -- the old Walboro carbs, and some of the Tillotson carbs had no floats, just several layers of check valves to let gas in one way , but that was way back in the 70's or so.

Are you sure, the reason for the gas overflow, is due to vibration? All the carbs are designed to work in a vibrating evironment. Does it leak, if you leave the gas on, and it just sits there?

Try setting your float height. Bend the tab up on the floats a tiny amount at a time and see if the carb stops overflowing. This will lower the depth of fuel in the bowl. If you go low enough, it will DEFINATELY stop your overflow problem but may also starve the motor of fuel during wide open stints or while climbing steep inclines. I think you should be able to find a happy medium between fuel leak and fuel starve.

Are you sure both of your floats are good (no leaks or dents)?

Yes my carb is in good shape. I dont think you guys under stand what I mean. When my bike is idling (sitting still) and I rev the gas My bike vibrates so much that when you look down at the overflow its dumping fuel till the vibration lowers, meaning when its just idling it dosent do it. Its probly doing this while I'm racing. maybe its a jet ski carb that dont use float bowls because of the rocking and fliping or what not. thanks for the help. KEEP IT COMING.

Bansheeesmoker, if your floats are set on the high side, then even the slightest vibration will cause fuel to flow out of the overflow tube. It is obvious that you have next to no understanding of how a carb float bowl works. Thus, I would like to instruct you to inspect your toilet. It works on the same principals. If you set the toilet tank float too high, water will constantly flow into the overflow tube (look into your toilet tank and you will see the tube I am talking about) and down into the bowl itself. Now try setting the toilet float so that the water flow stops right near the top of the overflow tube. Next, stand back and start kicking the toilet tank repeatedly. You will notice that water spills over into the tube and travels down into the bowl (this simulates the fuel in your case, spilling out onto the ground). If you then set the float even lower, you will see that water will not make it from the tank to the bowl no matter how fast or hard you kick the tank.
