Default BORE OR STROKE?

I had a 330 kit with all the goodies except I left the bottom end stock. Not a good idea. The rod is notorious for failure in the 300ex and 400ex highly modded motors. I found this out after mine decided to change itself from and internal component to an external one. Both case halves, three fins on the cylinder and my aftermarket oil cooler were all in the way when it made its exit to the track below. I have a 385 kit now (with a heavy duty rod) and it runs good, a real torque monster, but I think the 330 run better. It was higher reving and was high compression piston, which overall gave better performance than the tons of torque the 385 gives IMO. There is a 352 stroker kit that is available that would be both bore and stroke. I wanted to go that route, but I needed a motor ASAP when mine puked 20 weight all over the track and I didn't have time to wait on the crank shop. The 385 is great for the woods, the low end power is competitive in about any class.

Check out poweroll.com, trinityracing.com, hetrickracing.com - you could also search for 300ex and come up with several more. You will have to have the cylinder bored and the head ported but the rest of it you could do yourself if you want to tackle it. Its pretty involved if you've never done it before, so you might want to check into just sending the engine off and having all the work done. 400s are cheap right now, but my 385 will outrun a stock 400 all day long. If you need something longer, you might look into a 400, the 300ex can get a little cramped - but its great for the TT track.
