i just built one from scratch.(and yes i have pics.) do you want to know the best stock parts or what parts do you want to know about. motor wise (stock form) the 88-89 has the best clutch and intake porting but the 86-87 clutch can be updated. in my opinion the 86 has the best gear ratios. if you want to know more e-mail and ask me i can tell you what i know. if you want to see before and after pics let me know.

Almost everything can fit any year. The 86-87 had the rear bolt-on motor mount that goes through the swing-arm, but they changed that in 88-89, so the '86-87 swing-arms are not only longer, they are built like the 400EX ones in order to accept the rear motor mount. I am running the bolt-on mount on my 88 250R engine, because I have it in a 400EX chassis, so yes all engines can be mounted either way. I actually prefer the swing-arm mount, because '88-89 250R's are nortorious for the swing-arm rubbing against the cases, and that mount eliminates that problem... The other differeces between the 86-87 & 88-89 is that the foot pegs mount differently, the swing-arm linkages are different, frame geometry is a little different, and the 86 was a short rod engine, whereas the 87-89's are long-rods (Stroke is the same). Also the 89 has the best clutch, and the 85-88 engines are all easily updated with the stock parts that cost about $60. Also the '85 ATC cylinder made the best power of all the years, that's the one that the Nics Pro-X cylinders were based off of. Look up the prices once, and you will see that the '85 cylinder is much more expensive to buy, due to the higher cost to make the cylider with the porting used... They also changed the transmission gearing in '87. Also the 86-87 a-arms can be adjusted to tip the tops of the tires in, whereas the 88-89 ones aren't adjustible.

That's the differences between the years. Hope that helps and if you ever have any questions just ask.
