Got a digatron pyrometer and started to put it on my YFZ 450. But I cant figure it out. I have it hooked up to the lighting coil but there is no rpm working one screen says .6 . no pyrometer either. Also has anyone ran them it says that you are supposed to moun the probe 2 ' away from the exhaust port but after alittle idling the header was cherry red on idle.

 

If you don't have a tach output from your CDI, you can wrap the Digatron wire around the spark plug wire about 10 times to pick up the rpm. The temp probe should be about 5" away from the exhaust port.

 

great i already drilled the hole 2" from the port. So you cant pick up the tach off the lighting coil like it says?

 

You see I took this off my Drag sled because the season is done and I thought that I would spray the 450 but wanted the motor to live for awhile. These guages do not work the same and they told me they would. There is not an extra wire for tach on my settup it tells me to splice into the lighting coil lead annd that is were it will pick up th signal.

 

Ok talked to Digatron I am not a dumby the guage is malfunctioning. Also I talked to them about the probe placement and they told me about 41/2 to 5" away from the exhaust and it depends on make and model for length away. He procceds to tell me that I should call the manufacturer befor installing the probe. I followed the instructions 2' away now why do they even say that if you are supposed to find out from the manufacturer. Man that ****@s me off.

 

I just put an egt gauge on the wife's bike. It said if it's a single cylinder then 6-8' away from the port. If it has multiple cylinders going into one pipe then put it about 2' from the outlet.

By the way, it is not uncommon for the yfz pipe to glow, especially an aftermarket pipe. We jetted one so rich at an idle we had to turn the screw in the keep it running and it still started glowing. Sparks told us that was perfectly normal. During the day you will not see it, but it was glowing at night for sure.

 

They said they use 2" as a reference because most of there buyers are into carting and thats where they mount it. Still cant believe my instructions say 2" when its more like 7. Also I know that the pipes glow but it only glowed befor the probe and at an idle. Is that normal at an idle?
