My motor was makin' a peckin' or raddlin' sound so i figured it was the valves needed adjusted.
I adjusted them.I then started her up to see if it sounded better. It was louder then before. You could hear it plainly and it was louder.Sounded like it was comin from the valves.Whats the deal?
I used the feeler gauge and was pretty sure i had them in spec.If they were out of adjustment worse would it cause this noise? If they are too loose would it do this? Please help me as soon as possible.PLEASE HELP!

what were the clearances you used, and did you re-check them after tightening the lock nuts?
I normally take me a couple of times to get the adjusters locked down without them moving slightly

Well the clearances listed are:
Intake: o.06-0.07mm (0.0023-0.0039in.)
On my feeler gauge it says:0.003
.076
mm
Is the inches on the top and mm on the bottom?
I used this one.But i dont understand cuz .076is past .07 right?
And for the Exhaust it says: 0.16-0.20mm (0.0063-0.0078in.)
I used .007
.178
mm
Did i use the correct ones?
If these are the correct settings to use im gonna do it again and i think maybe i didnt have enough drag between the two on the feeler gauge so maybe they are too loose?Maybe?
But i still dont understand the one i mentioned earlier.
Sorry so long but i need your help o great one!
Thanx again.
And im pretty sure they were tight cuz i did recheck.
You are so much help!

Actually, my specs for intake are .06--.10mm so you could go a little wider if you have that combo of leaves in your gauge. I try to set mine closer to the wider limit as the valves tend to get tighter with wear. The exh. specs are correct, I set those toward the high side or middle (.18) mm.
On any of my gauges the top number is inches. You may have read the mm numbers and then set them with the inch gauges, making them really loose. Make sure to hold the adjuster absolutely still when locking them down. You want only the least drag on the gauges, otherwise they will be tight.

You may want to write the metric specs on a piece of paper before starting again, to avoid mixing the two sets of numbers together when you read the gauge later.

Make sure that your piston is on top dead center (TDC) when you check the clearances. If you still have problems, call Tony at John's Kawasaki - he always seems to have time to help a guy out.

Make sure you are on TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke, not the EXHAUST stroke.

Well i went out and adusted them again.I am doing everything right.Yes it is on TDC.
I tightened them up some and it was better then before when they were looser. But its still makin the same noise.I dont want to get them too tight and i dont have any smaller leaves within the specs in my manual. But it seems that the tighter i went the better i got.But not good enough.
What do you think?
I am gonna take it to the shop and let them do it.But i would like to still have your opinion.
Ill have to go talk to Tony at the Yamaha shop i guess.
I was gettin so aggravated cuz i know i was doin everything right but it wasnt quieting down like it should.
Well i really appreciate everyones information.
I have learned alot on here and from my Clymer's manual.(aka The 4wheeler bible)
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you're on the right track, Swain; I meant to communicate there are TWO TDC's every cycle with a four-stroke; the valves should be adjusted between the compression and power strokes. Good luck, I hope Tony fixes you up.

Default Please Help! Adjusted valves and noise is louder.

I am having the same problem on my 2003 Raptor. When I went to adjust the intake, the seemed tight. So I loosened them up. The exhausted seemed fine, but the pecking was louder. Could I be adjusting them on the exhaust stroke? Would it make that much difference? And do I need to go tighter?
