Racing Gas, Which is Best?
#1
I have a ported/polished/bored 98 Banshee with a Coolhead and 18cc domes. I run about 168 pds. compression.
I ride mostly at sea level.
I have been using VP12 and Sunoco Purple Race Gas. I like these not only for the increased Octane, but they smell great when burned! I love that 2-stroke smell in the morning!
My local gas station just started having TRICK Racing gas available at the pump. This gas is about $1.00 cheaper per gallon than the VP12 and Sunoco, and is located very close to my home.
I was wondering several things about TRICK Racing gas:
What is the Octane?
Will it work as well for me as the VP12 and Sunoco Purple?
When burned, will it smell as good (sweet!) as the VP12 and Sunoco Purple?
Is the shelf life of TRICK as good as the others?
What Racing Gas do you prefer and why?
What Racing Gas would be best for my application?
Thanks!

I've ran AvGas, Trick, VP and some other "local" brands of race gas. I prefer VP C12 the best. It has the highest motor octane number. This provides the closest "real world" octane rating. I don't like Trick because they tend to advertise thier numbers a little differently, which I much don't care for, it seems almost as they want you to think higher numbers equate to more power. For what would normally be an averaged 110 octane Trick likes to say it's 114.
VP makes some good arguements, or I'll even admit sales pitches, about thier fuels. Octane is cheap and easy to get, getting a fuel blended that will provide more response and power with that it the point too. I've came across a number of engine builders that all reccommend running VP C12. Have you thought about buying a drum of fuel??? With it capped and sealed up well it will last for a year or more, and the bulk cost is typically less. I always try to mix up only as much fuel as I will need for a weekend, and then when I park the beast, I put a golf tee in the vent hose to keep the "goodies" from evaporating out of the tank.

Here is a sight that will help you with your questions.

I too have had excellant luck with VP Fuels but lately have been using Torco 110 since it is easier to get and cheaper to buy. I really have not noticed a difference. VP C-12 was costing me about 4.25 a gallon and I now get Torco 110 for around 3.25 a gallon.

Excellent site for information on Racing Gas.
From the looks of this site, the Trick and VP C-12 appear to be better, overall, than the Sunoco Purple 111 fuel I have been using. What do you think? Is one really better than the other?
Also, does the Trick fuel have that same burnt 2-stroke smell as the VP and Sunoco products have?
According to this chart, the Sunoco is unleaded. The Trick and VP products are leaded. Which should I be using and why?

I needed race gas in hurry the other day. I found a place that sells Sunoco locally. But my motor builder recommended VP C-12.
So I called the national distributers of VP (from there website). After a call to the east coast distributers, I had a listing of a few places that sell in my area.
If you are going to use a lot, I think you can get a 50 gallon drum delivered to your house. This is what I am going to do next year.
