Default 660 question...

I just got a 04 660 Raptor and the owner before me added a TF-4 exhaust and headpipes, after riding a while the headpipe starts to glow, do I need to rejet the carb? or is a little glowing normal with this exhaust?

Could be lean if the previous owner didn't jet properly, but it should have other symptoms as well (like a lot of deceleration backfire).

But, do a plug check..... Do a run down the street and when you are in 3rd gear ~full throtle, pull in the clutch and hit the kill switch. Pull out the spark plug and see if it is light or white.

i think that that is normal. if it runs well and doesn't backfire i think u should be okay....and, correct me if im wrong, i don't think that the temperature of the exhaust is effected by jetting...

Default 660 question...

Temp not effected by jetting? If an engine is lean it will run hot......that is what destroys a lean engine in the end.......

I think we get a lot more of these posts in the fall and winter. There are several other such posts on the board right now. One thing to consider is that cold air is more dense than warm air, so that may contribute to an already lean condition (this was probably more of an issue with the old 2-strokes, than it is with a modern 4-stroke), but something to consider.

Another thing, the days are shorter in the fall and winter, and folks are out riding in the dark more. Maybe their headers are always glowing, but in summer the days are long and they just can't see the glow??????????

well if its backfiring you are defiantly running lean, then i guess that means hotter temps ... and i think recon ranger might have a point with that glowing in the dark thing.....

I have a raptor... if you check this site, www.raptorforum.com you can find all the info you need. A quick FYI glowing headers is normal if the quad is idling... If you are riding around and your headers are bright red, shut it down. A little glow is normal. Backfiring is typical of a lean condition. Go up a size in jet OR adjust your fuel/mix screws. Like i said, check raptorforum.com here is a link to the page http://www.raptorforum.com/index.php?board=3.0
