I have a 1984 Honda TRX200 that was once rebuilt before I purchased it a few years ago, I was riding it last year and it just lost all power and died never started since. I get a spark but have hardly any compresion, I took it to a small engine repair shop and he said the top end probably needs to be rebuilt it probably burnt up the rings he wanted to charge me $400. Can't I rebuild this my self pretty easy. I have never worked on a 4 stroke before but have rebuilt several 2 stroke dirtbikes in the past. All I have to do is pull off the cyinder and get it sleved or honed and replace the piston, rings, pin, circlips & Gaskets right? and mabye get the valves seated and ground & put it all back together. Can I pull the cylinder without pulling the motor out of the frame? What is the easiest way to make sure that it is the rings and not a bent or broke valve letting all my compresion out, Could it be the compresion releave is stuck open?

i had the exactly same experiance with this. I have a 1984 honda bigred 200es that lost all power while i was riding it and it was the compression. I am having it rebuilt currently and it is costing me about 300. You can probably do it yourself but you might have to take the engine off to get the head out you will just have to see. TO get the engine out all you do is take out all the moter mounts and just pull it out the drive shaft should just slide out. YOu can tell if your valves are the porblem if they are not in a perfect circle and are not closing all the way then it is you valves. IF they are alright then you probably have to get it bored out and put new piston rings ect. in it.
