Old post sure...but I never come here any more.
When dropping a tooth on the countersprocket it IS equal to 3 teeth in the rear. However, when relating this to chain length, it is not the same. Generally you can add or remove a tooth on the CS without having to cut or lengthen the chain. But if you add or remove 3 teeth to the rear sprocket, you will definitely have to modify your chain.
