All this talk about performance gains with the coolhead and nothing good comming out of it. What is a killer of horespower??? HEAT!!! While you may not gain arm jerking power from a coolhead alone, it will make the power for a longer period of time by not getting as hot. Just look at the name----> COOLhead. Jiga, if I was you I would jump on the v-force reeds and cages. They are a banshee must. We live in Texas. It gets way hot here. The coolhead will keep the motor running cool and fast. I can tell you some overheating nightmares. I will spare you this time! Be warned. A melted banshee engine is a costly repair! Just my 2 cents. Later All!!!

Aaron you are right it gets dang hot around here. One thing though like you said the name COOLHEAD and that is just it. The head stays cooler. With those beautiful rubber plugs that yamaha decided to leave in the bottom of the cylinders there isn't much room for the water to circulate and cool. Power Playground does a absolutely COOL mod for $250, but it does require some mechanical knowledge. He actually takes the plugs out of the cylinders and the cases so that water completely circulates and has more time to cool. Machines the holes because they have to be different sizes because of flow of water through the motor. He said the cylinder temps vary quite a bit, and get pretty toasty. With this mod they are equalized and run cooler that with a coolhead. This guy told us so many tricks to do to banshees to gain a little here and a little there. There is so much power you can squeeze out of them and I never knew it. I imagine if you did both geez imagine the cooling capacity. You could probably add and extra quart of coolant to your system.

Coolheads. Have you ever seen the toomey website? Read what they have to say about the coolheads. The head has little to do with it. Water takes heat away from the engine. The radiator is what cools the water. A radiator can only cool a certain amount. If you want your engine to run cooler, get one of the bigger radiators available from toomey or pro design. Didn't you see the magazine article a month or so ago about the Trinity head? I have a Trinity motor, so I am the last person to bad mouth anything they have. But the cool head is not worth $300 unless you want the performance of a milled head, and must have the look. They look great, but read that article. I will look up that article and post what mag, what issue, what page so you can read it.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Cleared up alot of info for me.

From reading these posts it sounds like I should not invest in a coolhead? and go with the reeds and cages.

I still have some time to decide and im not in any hurry to buy more parts but have the spare money to do so. Thats why I come here to get good info from you all.

Thanks everyone.

And yes, Jen, I'll be there come rain or tornado (well maybe not tornado, but I'll be there

Yeah, Yeah. I have seen Toomeys site. I have nothing at all against Toomey. I run there clutch pack. It has out lasted any clutch I have bought yet. But of course there gonna say the coolhead is not really worth the $$$$. They want to sell you a 400$ + radiator. The allumin. head dissipates heat better than cast steel (which is what the stock head is). The cast head will heat up quicker and take longer to cool dwn. The allum. will take longer to get hot and will not hold the heat as long or as hot as the cast. As far as Trinity goes......Well you are a trinity man so I wont go there. But this is some fun stuff. Jennifer, I like the sound of pulling the plugs. Now that sounds like a smooth deal. Later all!!!!

JIGA, this will be my last response to this issue. See DirtWheels, Feb. '01 issue, page 140-142. On page 142, it states that the
Stage 4 head ran the same temp. as the stock head. I understand that the stage 4 was running at higher compression than does a stock head and that it has to offset a little extra temp because of this. Horsepower is heat. BUT, the comment about spending $400 biguns on a radiator doesn't make sense to me. They're willing to spend $300 on a coolhead, which may lower temps a few degrees. And it looks cool! But then they act like $400 for a radiator is ridiculous. If you want to get the most out of your cooling $, I stand by the radiator 100%. Ask the mags about it. Of course, they would tell you to run them both because they don't want to step on the aftermarket peoples toes. It is those people that keep the magazines going. Tell you what, if someone you trust tries the coolhead, see if it makes a difference. Actually take temps before and after installation of it. Then you can post the info back here and then we'll all know how efficient the coolhead really is.
And I hate to say it, but Yamaha should have had a larger radiator on the stock machine. Then again, they have to make it where it can run in all conditions. Had they put a larger radiator on it, someone in Wisconsin would have a frozen banshee.
And by the way, I'm using the stock head on my 420. Don't you think that if heat was that much of a problem that Trinity would have insisted upon me using their stage 4 head? Because they didn't suggest it. They simply asked me which head I wanted to use. I said stock and no more was ever said about it. They told me that I could trailride it without problems. I'm not saying that it doesn't run warmer than stock, because it does. I ran it last July, and it was probably 95 degrees here and I didn't have any problems.
Heat does kill off horsepower. I guess I'm not having to worry about it, since I was still able to blow away a friends Fireball 440 stroker, and I was also able to beat a nitrous burning CR500 motored 250R!

Aaron you going to Weatherford's opening this sunday? I didn't know if they would postpone because of the rain. I think the coolhead debate is finished. I heard the more shiny stuff you got on your quad the faster it GOES! Is this true? Hehe.

JIGA, There a bunch of guys that ride at Rocky Ridge who run a coolhead. Most banshee's that I've raced seem faster with a coolhead, that's just been my experience. There was a guy with a new 2001 banshee, toomeys pipes and a new coolhead there last weekend. The thing was ripping!!!! I think these guys run with high compression. I think the coolhead will help with overheating.

Oh you bet I am going to Weatherford. I have been still for too long. I will get smoked but, oh well. I have been out all day looking for a new trailer. I cant decide between a toy box (travel traler that has a back door), or a bigger cargo trailer. I am thinking about the toy box real hard. You going to Weatherford?
