Aftermarket pipes, are they really that good?

Collider,
Well, of course, a lot depends on what you expect to gain from adding a pipe, and where in the band you expect to gain it. There are a few pipes that do very little other than make noise (you can email me for those) and others that are tunable allowing you to obtain some increase in specific parts of the band.
If you expect to gain eye-watering acceleration or white knuckle top end by adding just a pipe, I think you'd be disappointed. Many brands however, will give you noticable improvement in performance.

A breif explanation. A stock system is like trying to breath through a coffee stiring straw. Adding an aftermarket exhaust would be like inhaling through the straw and exhaling without. Adding a good air filter works best with an aftermarket pipe. Thus the engine breaths easier making more power. Example...I recently installed an adjustable racing exhaust on my mojave, when i punched it there was a hesitation. I then installed a K&N air filter and it was gone, and there was a noticeable power increase. The bottom line is if you replace the exhaust replace the air filter, and an aftermarket exhaust will definately be LOUDER than stock.
