Best 2 stroke oil to use?
#1
I have a 1984 honda atc 250r. I've had the head milled, ported cylinder, wiseco piston, boyeson carbon fiber reeds, kehihn 39mm carb, dg exhaust, and k&n filter. I just had it resleeved so it is at it's standard bore. If i run regular high octane gas it pings badly. So i run 114 octane race fuel. I've been running klotz and castor 927. What is the best two stroke oil to use? I want something that won't seperate with the race fuel. Can i mix the race gas with the 92 octane pump gas and run it together? Is there a minimum octane i have to use. It has right at 200 lbs of compression. I want to make it the most reliable as possible. What is a good mixture to run. I've been running it at 32:1. Thanks for the help.

I run 112 race gas with the 927 at 32:1 And it runs outstanding. I do make it a habit to always shake the fuel container before I pour into tank, also if it has been a while since I've ridden the machine I give it a few good shakes before starting. I have never run Klotz, but I hear it's quite good.
One thing, once you start using a certain brand you should stick with it, I would continue using the race gas.

I use Klotz supertechniplate(can't they find a shorter name?) This has worked good for me. I did melt down a 250R using Amsoil. Of course there are many factors that can cause a melt down, but it sure looked like oil failure to me...Never again!

Duane,
I don't know for sure if the amsoil caused my meltdown. I had used Klotz all summer with no problems. I ran out of oil and had to buy some amsoil from my local dealer. It melted down on my next ride. I rebuilt it, dumped out the amsoil, put some more Klotz in, never had a problem since. The piston looked like it had come into contact with the cylinder because of oil failure. I thought this, so did a friend of mine who does motors for a few national caliber snow-cross racers. Other things could have caused it, maybe I bought some bad gas? Maybe some of the sludge in the bottom of the amsoil bottle didn't dissolve?

I've always used 92 octane pump gas. When I dumped the bottle of amsoil into my ratio rite, there were some wax looking chunks of stuff that came out of the amsoil bottle towards the end. I just assumed that they would dissolve in the fuel(which they probably did). Do you own Amsoil or something? I'm just stating what happened to me. I had stated right away that I wasn't positive that Amsoil caused my failure. Yes, I did drain out all of my gas that had Klotz in it before I put the amsoil in it, so mixing the 2 wasn't the problem. Again, maybe I had some bad gas.....Say what you want...I'm sticking with Klotz.

Klotz is sludgy. And it burns dirty.
You probably mixed the Amsoil with gas that had Klotz in it. The oils, one being castor, one being synthetic, might have reacted to each other and created a slime. I've had this happen in my R before. Then you plugged up your jets, ran lean, and boom.
I for one will NOT run a castor based oil mixed with gasoline. You need excessive RPM's (around 10,000) to completely burn this oil so it does not leave a disgusting resin all over your piston, exhaust port, and pipe. However, I do run castor with alcohol. Yes, I know Supertechniplate is only 20% castor, but it still is dirty burning.
You can't beat a good synthetic oil with gas.

Dill and donottreadonme,
You guys could be right. I did tip the gas tank upside down(but you never get all of the gas out). I didn't drain the float bowl though, I never realized mixing was THAT touchy! I have friends that have used Amsoil for years without trouble. What do you guys think of Bel ray?
