A frind of mine had a stroke and has very limited use of one arm. He rides a blaster and has rerouted the clutch cable to the foot brake lever. I think both brakes were then rigged to one handle bar lever on the same side as his twist throttle.

Theres a guy in the oklahoma/texas area I believe that races a polaris scrambler 500 with only one arm. I think I read the article in Holeshot Magazine www.holeshotmag.com I think... Personally I think this guys crazy... Most people (even me at times) think that its scary to race with two arms on the bars, much less one... Good luck.

My friend bought a Polaris Trailblazer from a guy with one arm. He was born without it so he grew up like that. Your son should be able to adapt pretty well. The trail blazer has a rear brake pedal and a "all 4 wheels" hand brake. I guess the guy just put the thumb throttle on the left side and used the foot brake. The Polaris has the hand brake on the Left side already but I don't know if he left it that way. I know your kid is way too small for something like the Tblazer but they are an easy machine to run and VERY stable. Something to think about for the future.

Thanks for all your imput guys

holyman does your friend still have the thumb throttle for the left side? if so i would like to buy it/ I cant find a thumb throttle for the left anywhere. I was thinking of going to a finger throttle
(like off a jetski or snowmobile) and i might be able to make it work
like a thumb throttle. Rember guys when you switch the thumb throttle
to the left side it wont work its upside down.

The guy used it backwards... so kind of like a finger control. I think you are on the right track with the waverunner/ snowmobile style throttle.

Hey Scott, I was born without the lower portion of my left arm. Off the top of my head, I don't have any ideas on the throttle. Actually I never really did any mods on my machines untill recently. I was allways able to adapt to my machines in stock form (been riding since early 60's). As I got older (and wiser) I realized that maybe some mods to the machines might make riding a little more comfortable and allow me to ride a little better. My biggest problem was that I had to sit way forward on the seat and lean in to the left so my stump could reach the bars. Granted I can't "grab" the bars on the left side, but applying my stump to the bars does add alot of stability and I can use it to pull on the bars on left turns and push on right turns. Also, sitting forward changes the handling characteristics of a machine. It makes it hard to lift the front end over rough terrain when going fast or to pull wheelies. To solve this problem I got an aftermarket brush gaurd and put it on the bars backwards so that the guard is facing the rear of the quad. I put some padding (pipe insulation) over the guard for comfort. Basically what I did was extend the bars to reach my arm. Now I can sit further back on the seat and not have to lean over to reach the bars. The end result has been fantastic. I have also been giving alot of thought to a steering stabilizer to ease the stress on my right arm. On my Scrambler I had to move the break handle over to the right side, not a big deal.

I'm glad to see that you are not coddling your boy. Or that you let people tell you that a kid with one arm can't or shouldn't do this or that. Not tooting my own horn but I've done everything from racing dirt bikes to flying airplanes. I've got 6 state championships, 2 state records and finished 3rd at nationals in archery (shooting against people with two arms). Two pieces of advice; 1) Never let anyone influence you or your sons wishes to persue any activity that he chooses because of his arm. 2) Don't tell him that he only has one arm, I still havn't figured it out yet.

SHIFT, I RACE WITH THE GUY YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!! He's freakin CRAZY! He's really really fast, even for a guy with 2 arms! He stepped up from the Polaris, and now he's riding a modded 01 Banshee. He just moved the clutch over to the right side of the quad, so his 1 arm does both the throttle and the clutch. It is definately possible to do, because this guy is a serious competitor at every race we're at.

Good luck to your son
