Ceramic coated Pistons ?
#1
I just tore my top end down on my 87' 250r. I've got two buddies that snowmobile. They told me to check into ceramic coated pistons. I guess in snowmobiles they're able to drop two jet sizes leaner. I don't care about the leaness to much but it could save me when I'm messing around jetting between 5000 ft and sea level. Mostly the durability is what I'm after. Does any one have any leads on the subject.
Also is there any documented jetting procedures that is good to follow I've got the dirtwheels article printed couple months ago. Thanks.

Ceramic coated pistons do offer an advantage in the situation that u are describing. they are not to popular right now in 4 wheelers because 4 wheelers do not run in conditions that are as various as sleds. one company that does experiment with piston coatings is LRD. they should be able to help u on this subject.

I've been running a LRD coated piston for about a year now. It was coated with a non-ceramic heat reflective coating on the crown and dry film lubricant on the skirt.
I tend to view the crown coating more as a safety margin, than being able to push my jetting right to the edge.
Call Arlan at LRD, it's worth your time.

Thanks quys I'll have to check with LRD. The cool thing about that they're only about hour and a half from me. the not so cool thing about that is I'll probably drain my pocket book on other stuff like pipes and little extras.
Hey backcountry what did it run? what else have you done to your rig? I kind of feel the same way about making things last. No matter how much money I spend someone else is just going to blow me away. So as long as I can make it up most hills and don't have to worry about messing up the engine, I'm happy.

If my memory serves me correct it was only about $25 to have both the crown and skirt coated. I'm a big advocate of piston coatings now. I won't ever run another piston without them.
My motor has been extensively worked over. But in a nutshell it's a ported 295cc. MSD Ignition, dual plug head, 39.6mm PWK(soon to go to a 41.5 PWK), drag pipe or a FMF Fatty as day's riding dictates, modified RAD Valve, lightened flywheel....and some other little things motor wise. Pretty much a full-race chassis under it(still a stock frame tho, maybe an Aren's next winter...).

Thanks backcountry,
I took my cylinder up to LRD last week. To my supprise those guys were pretty cool. Most my luck in shops like that, they look at you and if you don't spend a couple grand with them they don't want to know you. They're just going to hone it and coat a stock size pro-X with the boost port. Its a start, in the future I'm kind-of thinking about a cool head and maybe some porting. Once I break it in I'll put a fmf pipe/silencer on and install some boisen reeds on the stock cage.
