Okay guys and gals, me and my girlfriend have been puting in quite a few hours of ride time, and she is just absolutely horrible at operating my 200XX (manual clutch), and she can't exactly handle my 450S or 300, so after quite some time, I have decided to keep my eye out for yet another 250X roller(3rd one) and a good condition 200SX (engine), then have it bored over to about 250cc and put it in there. I have heard of this idea before on the old forums. And now, I believe someone is considering this for a 400EX frame. She just needs a bike with "decent" suspension, and an auto clutch, so this was my best idea....

Hey, this is a good idea as my gf has the same problem with the manual clutch. How fast will a 200SX enginge (not bored) be and how fast would it be bored? Could it compete with the 250X/300EX? What about a pipe/silencer? Would the 250X one fit, or a 200SX fit the 250X frame? What kind of mods to fit the engine in the frame would be needed? Just motor mounts? I was going to buy her a 250X and just have her get used to the clutch, but this might be better. Thanks.

you seriously wanna do that to a x/ex.....ahhh...
umm.....200sx motor is similar to honda fatcat (may have no reverse though)...don't quote me on that..would be good conversion..i had a 200sx while in school..wished it could leap buildings! try using a higher compression piston in the same bore....i had 11:1 wiseco
it was a bit excessive...then again it could foot it with a lakota :-), now i ride a 250x
...port and polish it,larger head pipe, k&n filter
larger main jet, you will be laughing
the bike in std form (std 200sx) should be about the same performance wise as the 200sx/250x cause the basic bikes are about the same weight and tire diameters aren't much different....in the ruff stuff the x chassis should walk away (3.1inch of travel in the std 200sx was never enough)
better still just buy a lakota

So what you are trying to say is that with a few mods like a pipe and piston that the 200SX motor should run like a 250X?
About the same speed and power too?

The reason that I dont get a Lakota is because the chassis is a little larger (my girlfriend is only 4'10" so I kinda need small) and I just dont like the way they feel. Plus I like Honda stuff.

Alrighty....
My brother had an '88 200SX for a few years, and I know it's a good bike, and capable of holding it's own. It aint all that slow either, I'd say upper fifties, 55-58 maybe(stock), but, it has an extremely short wheelbase, there's really no aftermarket parts for that chassis, the front tires are too small and the front hubs have an odd bolt diameter(4x85 vs. normal hondas-4x110), the suspension isn't the absolute best, and I absolutely hate those "chopper" style bars, bla bla bla, the list goes on, so to me, it would be cheaper and easier in the long run, to just dump it in another frame. I guess there's really no reason to bore it, I just want to, get a few more cubes out of it. Prolly end up putting a pipe on it, and prolly need to get the clutch rebuilt on it whenever I find it, cause I think these bikes have a problem with the clutch slipping, thus not being able to carry out the full speed, among other things. I think I'll have the frame powder coated (translucent blue) then get some, 300EX plastic and have it painted blue at an auto body shop, prolly leave it mostly stock (depending on the condition of the frame), and prolly slap a set of 22" bandits all the way around on ITP aluminum rims. Oh yeah, the Lakota is not an option, as for one thing, I want her to help me "build" it, so she'll appreciate it more, and learn more on how it works, plus, I think Lakotas are ugly, and they're not a Honda.

good to hear from you guys
the 200sx/x bike will never be quite like a 250x because you don't have the torque unless you bore it.....and it depends on the front sprocket, but then again where does the relimiter cut in on the sx motor....the 250x is 8500rpm...that is partly why the 250x is slightly quicker in standard 300ex ....the 250x uses a 13 to a 38 on the back... i have never really put an x up against the sx....because i have one of few 250x in new zealand....yes new zealand....and the sx was my first project bike....i never had a chance to compare.....this conversation is only based on experience.....my bikes clutch used to slip a little....but i put that down to the wiseco piston and the fact that it was a part of the bike un touched in its rebuild(was a dairy farmers bike, i brought two as wrecks and made one good one!)....if you want clutch parts apparently the plates in a xr200 kit are the same...but sounz like you guys don't have problems finding parts over there.....i can't believe you guys can get second hand parts (the frame) so cheap...i could not find a second hand rear shock in nz....OEM was going to cost $1100NZD! any 250x in nz are still going, they don't stop
sounz like it could be a good conversion let us know how it goes
good to see true honda people
i have owned 4 bikes
dad is on his 3rd 300 4x4, and also has a 450es
grandfather is on his 2nd 300 2x4, grandmother has a 200sx....hondas good bikes can't kill em
i though the lakota was a good looking bike....never mind

OK guys I currently have a 200SX.It just doesn't produce any torque.I know that you can buy a Web Hard Weld Cam and a higher compression piston. But I've already torn out one clutch completely stock.Look into the EBC aftermarket clutch kit for it.Oh yea I like the short wheel base I can ride a wheelie forever. Also UNI makes an aftermarket filter and DG and Cobra make mufflers for it.

since we're on the discussion, I have a 86 200sx that my daughter rides but she wants more power, no clutch and looks. What can I do to this engine to so she can look good to all the boys on their bikes? I want to do it soon but I don't know what can be done to this engine. You never see kits avail. for this bike anymore and it's one of the best trail atv's that any maker ever designed without the clutch. ANY HELP?

If I were you take the racks off first. Then you could either buy a DG or Cobra muffler for it(Cobra makes two pipes and DG also does) then install a UNI air filter and Web cams makes a hotter cam for it.When the engine needs rebuilt install a 11 to 1 Wiseco piston.

I have owned both the Mojave and 250X and to me the Mojave feels more cramped. Take her to the dealer and just try the Lakota (same body as Mojave). I think you can find a Lakota used thats cheaper than this conversion. had another thought. I wonder it a ATC 250SX/Fourtrax 250 auto clutch would work with some mods, it might be cheaper and easier. Also in the later 80s Suzuki done thier own version of the Lakota and put there LT230 engine in a Quadsport frame (auto clutch/E Start/reverse. Somthing to think about, but I would still just by a Lakota, I'm going to get one for my fiance.
