for the last couple weeks i've been trying to gathering info on how to put a kickstart on my 400ex so it will make it lighter since i'm planning to race mx. now since the xr400 is almost the same as the 400ex motor, if i took the side cluch cover or panel whatever you call it would it work? are the side pannels the same? i went to my local dealer to look at the xr400 side cover but all they had was the 250(only smaller) and i think it will work/ what do you think?

I went to a local dealer and I looked at the side case of a XR400. They look similar but looks can be deceiving.

It means that I have no idea if they are the same. If I were you I'd ask my dealer if they are the same.

Can you get a kickstarter for the 300EX? My quad stalled today during a race and the battery was dead so I couldnt get restarted!
Someone once told me that you just hae to knock a little cover oout of the motor and then there is a spot for the kickstarter inside there, but I highly doubt that. would the side case off a 250X work?
thanks

I know that the 250x/300ex thing works but i've never seen a 400ex with a kick start. You might shave 20 pounds but the 400 is a pain to start cold and mine constantly stalls when its cold. That would suck to have to kick it so much. And if you got a higher compression piston it would be even harder to start than a stocker, and I never saw a manual decompression lever ether. I just left the electric start on it.

I'm not worries about the cold. During the winter i sit beside our woodstove in our garage and heat ity up 15-30 min and starts right up.

In my opinion, the weight you lose would not be worth the money you would have to spend.
