Get a k&n airfilter w/ outerwear. I got one for mine and was pleased when I inspected it after riding that the sand wasn't all over it with the airbox lid off. I switched from a wb foam to this and rejetted. Its alot more responsive throttle-wise.

With out trying to sound rude....There is really no way anyone can tell you what the best first mod is for you.... You need to ride the machine and figure out what you can do to make it better for you.... If you follow the pack (so to say) you might end up with a machine like everyone elses that will not work for you.....
I am used to riding a banshee,,,,so when I hopped on the 400ex (girlfreinds)....I wished for more snap in the throttle.(airbox/sprockets/cam? maybe/pipe).... then I wanted to get rid of the tendency to roll around corners(tires).....some higher rpm's would be nice..( cdi box).....The stock shocks are pretty good for now....eventually (for me).....a wider front end would be nice.
When building a bike....It's always better to think into the future rather than with the pocket book (spur of the moment).....Some mods just don't work well together....and it's nice to kinda think about where you want to go with the machine in the end...and buy accordingly.
good luck

If you've got 2k to spend on mods you can do just about anythng and everything to it. Start with a filter and a pipe. Then I would get some suspension, works shocks work well and dont cost an arm and a leg. Then a cam, and whatever else suits your fancy. I would love to have 2grand to spend!
