is it possible or has anyone tried to install double row bearings in a stock honda axle carrier? are these bearings availible locally or are they specifical made for this appication?anyone know the part number for these bearings?

 

I belive you can in you machine the carrier so another bearing would fit behind where the stock one would go. You'll also have to machine the sleeve in the center down by the same amount. I am going to do it the next time I need to replace the rear bearings in my 'R'.

 

What are the differences between tapered and twin row carriers/bearings? Any benefits?

 

tapered bearing carriers use a tapered roller bearing like a front wheel bearing in car. because of the design of this type of bearing one can not be manufactored as thin as the standard roller bearing that comes stock, and the carrier can only be so big in diameter to fit in the swingarm, so there is not as much ecentric in the carrier. so you lose 30% to 50% of your chain adjustment. a double row bearing carrier has ball type roller bearings like stock but the bearing has 2 rows of ***** side by side to distribute load over a greater area.the advanages of tapered bearings are more surface area on the rollers and they are designed to handle side loads. roller bearings are sealed and more compact to allow more chain adjustment. wear durability is a contraversy due to water and dirt contamination, but i would say that is more of a maintaince and setup problem than anything.
