Default Backup Lights Always On/ Sportsman 500

The white backup lights are always on. I have a 2005 Sportsman 500. Any ideas? I'm thinking it might have something to do with the switch involved w/ the shift linkage but haven't really dug into it yet.

Thanks also OPT for your help with the my prop shaft issue.

Could possibly be gear case switch short or connections causing the lights to stay on. I've replace several of these over the years, but usually would show up on the gear position on the speedo if faulty. Also since it's a 2005 model I'm always leery about the ecm modules even if they've been replaced with the updated Shure Power module. They can cause all sort of electrical problems. Pull the connector on the gear case switch and see if the lights go off, plus do the same on the ecm module and clean all connections and use dielectric grease on the connections. Hopefully it's something simple. OPT

The speedo display shows the correct shift position if thats what you talking about. The ECM module is located where?

I'll follow up w/ what I find and solution. Thanks!

The ecm is located under the front panel and should be a big silver finned module. IF you still have the black Chinese finned module contact your nearest dealer as it is under a major recall! Like I said even the newer ones can cause problems, but not sure if this is the cause of the backup lights remaining on. Pull the ecm connections one at a time and see if the lights go off. If they do,then you have a module problem. OPT

I pulled the connector on the shift switch and no change...light still on. I did locate the ECM and it is silver...says Shure Power. Looks like I'll have to pull the front rack tho to get to it and check those connections.

Well I know I said I was hoping to not post for awhile but sadly the new kid is having a problem. Figured I would revive this thread as it's the same issue.

The backup lights are stayin on, it has a black Japan labeled ecm. Still have to unplug the wires for the exam and see if the lights go out, the gear sensor don't do a thing. Will a dealer replace the ecm for me?

lol winchestor120, i was just thinking about this thread today when I was out plowing w/ the 500. Once I found out it was the ecm I said screw it and have just run it w/ the backup lights on..so for over two years. Couldn't even guess if Polaris will replace it but I'd expect not. Good luck anyway with yours.

If either of you still have the black Chinese module in your machines and have NEVER had the updated ecm installed,Polaris has to replace it with the updated kit as it was a safety recall at no cost to. There is no time limit on this.Polaris Industries Expands Recall of ATVs Due to Fire Hazard | CPSC.gov Even includes 2004 models.

All of the 2005 Sportsman 500 carb models were included in the recall. Kits looked like this.http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Surepower-ECM-Kit-Polaris-OEM-2203348-400-450-500-/300963945357?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4612d95b8d&vxp=mtr
